Vinyl CPO over trackball mount question
« on: April 28, 2006, 09:41:56 am »
I've got one of the black "no hardware showing" trackball mounts for my 2 1/4" trackball.  It's got a textured kinda coating.  I was planning to cover my entire wood CP with the textured black vinyl from PartsExpress, including the trackball mount.  Will the textured mount show through the textured CP vinyl?  I'm thinking this will look like crap and I should just put the trackball mount OVER the vinyl.  Not my ideal scenario though.  I was hoping for the no hardware look across the entire CP.

Any feedback/thoughts on this are appreciated!

There's no reason you can't have it on top. Some people think it looks bad and use a router to drop it down flush with the top of the control panel and then put they vinyl over that. It's what I did, but I'm no woodworker and I think it looks just 'OK'. I'm not sure I think it's worth the bother if you don't mind having it visible.

I dropped mine flush as well...never used a router in my life. What I did, I'm not sure if your situation is similar, I have the dremel routing attachment. I drew a line around the plate and used mine dremel router to make a few passes. I then knocked off the rest with a chisel instead of making a billion passes. After that I cleaned it up and it turned out great.
I had to beat them to death with their own shoes...

I don't know if this will help, but I just routed my trackball hole a few days ago. I dropped my CP 1/8 in with a router. (make your layer drop first before cutting the hole).
Here is a picture of mine.
Good luck.

Myx, your cab is looking great!

Do you have a pic with the mounting plate sitting in the routed area?

There are a few pictures of the CP right after I routed.

Just take your time and it will look good. I did mine just like everyone else, routed the top and it came out good. Remember that its better to take off too little than too much, so go in steps.

This is very true.
