Tinted Plexi in Chicago Suburbs?
« on: April 25, 2006, 01:32:55 pm »
Looking for the gray tinted plexiglass to use in the monitor bezel as used by Oscar.  No luck at Lowes, Ace Hardware, Home Depot, or Menards (they did have the bronze though).  According to the posts, Home Depot stopped carrying it a couple years ago, anyone from Chicagoland bought any recently?

I was looking for tinted plexi for the longest time. I ended up going with a piece of smoked glass, realativly cheap, easy to obtain, and a perfect custom cut. You might want to look into it.

Have you tried your local auto glass shops?  I got my tinted plexi from one called "Insta Glass" here in Canada.  Try the Yellow Pages and good luck!

Not sure which suburbs you are close to but I found a plastics place in Schaumburg,Il that I bought from. The address is Schaumburg but its in an industrial park thats close to it's border with Streamwood not far from the Schaumburg Flyers stadium.

Streamwood Plastics

Schaumburg,Il,60193

I was originally looking for a piece of 1/4" lightly smoked but after I told the owner what I wanted it for he thought regular tinted plexi would cause glare problems with sun or lighting from the outside and from the monitor on the inside.I haven't really heard to many people on the forums complain about this but I took his recommendation and used a non-glare type used in some of the better picture frames. It only comes in 1/8 and clear.I used 2 1/8"  sheets and sandwiched my bezel art between them.It worked out very well and was happy with the looks but it was a little on the pricy side,I think close to $50 for the 2 sheets. They vary with whats on hand but can order most anything you would want in a couple days.

Thanks for the post wrench.  I do drive through Schaumburg once a week.  The other option I found (besides auto glass places) is Mcmaster.  I believe they've got a pickup place in Elmhurst to avoid shipping.

A guy I work with just built a cocktail cabinet and he picked his Smoked Lexan up from:

Carlson Glass and Mirror in Wheaton, IL.

I wanted grey plexi, but went with grey tempered glass as it was close to $40 less than the plexi. I think that it looks a heck of a lot better anyway.

Just got back from menards and they have smoke plexi. Its Lucite brand comes in 3 different sizes. a 24x24 was around $15 if I remember correctly. I got the clear for my marquee for now. Will get the smoke when I build my minicade for my son next week.

Oh, this was in Joliet on RT52.
