Classic Phone Love??
« on: April 24, 2006, 02:39:32 pm »
Well, had to get rid of my NGage (no more mame on my phone) and got a RAZR.   Great phone for many things, but no games... but you can buy some.

They have a few classic games but I'm not sure which are that good.  I got ZUMA (clone of that game where the balls come rolling in on a line, and you shoot balls at it to get 3 in a row to leave... whatever its called)

Anyway, the controls kinda stink with it.... Some games the bad buttons just aren't playable....   It just makes me wonder why I'm playing on the phone.

Are any classic games worth it on a phone?    MetalSlug Mobile Impact?  Pacman?  Ms Pacman?  Pacmania?  BurgerTime?  DigDug?  Frogger?  Galaga?  Tetris?

Any non classic I should look at?

I'm on Verizon and can't install any j2me games without hacking the phone (in ways that scare me :) ).

Any comments?

Thanks!

I have the LG VX8000 which is a higher end phone. (I also have Verizon). I have downloaded many games with the hopes of something there to satisfy me on long trips or something. I currently have Atari Legends Vol. 1, Lemmings, Bubble Bobble, Defender, and Prince of Persia.
Atari Legends just plain SUX!!!! I even called and tried to get my money back and they would not allow it. (it has asteroids, Centipede, and Atari Combat (2600 version). all are horible and terribly slow.  >:(

Defender is only good for making that cool defender sound at the begining of the game. But as a game it is near impossible to play. There is no control and defender is a hard game to start with.  :'(

Bubble Bobble is a little better but still somewhat hard to do on a phone. Plus on this game they put an arcade cabinet graphic on the edges of the screen which make the game screen really small. Hard to see.  :-\

Lemmings is fun but a bit hard to control. Not having a mouse makes the curser movement slow. You are allowed to pause, so this helps with the fumbling with the phone trying to get the curser to go.  :)

Prince of persia was the best of the bunch. the game play is somewhat smooth but jerky in parts and the combat gets a little clunky. But this one had the best sound animation and graphics.  :D

Sorry, not a real positive review. Just trying to save you some money and sadness.

Did you have the ngage with Verizon? How was the ngage?

ngage was on tmobile.  Was a decent little game machine - but a sucky phone.  You could play a bunch of older games with 6 frameskip still keeping them fun.  But I couldn't hear anyone, nobody could hear me... and I could get a connection most places.

I'm starting to think I should look at getting a PSP if I want mobile gaming and leave my phone to...well...talking...

I have the LG VX9800 w/Verizon.  It flips open to a larger screen, not sure how well these play on smaller phones.

I have downloaded these games:

Yahtzee Deluxe (great quick game, the one I play the most)
Frogger (decent.  they cut the cars and lillypad portions on the screen to make it a bit more visible.  it seems to get harder faster than the original)
Galaga by Namco (not too bad, hard to move and shoot at the same time, so it isn't near as good as the original)
Tetris (great game, but i find I hardly ever have enough time to play an entire game, as such, I rarely play it)
MightAndMagic (kinda stinks, IGN gave it a 9.1, not sure why)

Hope that helps!
