Plunge Router v. ...non-plunge???
« on: February 27, 2003, 05:50:20 pm »
Okay...so I need a router to build this project.  There's no way around it.  Should I get a Router, or a Plunge Router?  What's the difference?  ....sure hope I get a response in the next few minutes.  The auction I'm looking at closes in less than half an hour  :)

You can do everything a plunge router will do with a regular router, the plunge router just makes it somewhat easier (and even that is debatable). I personally don't care for plunge routers and prefer to use a normal one. 99% of what you need a router for does not require the plunge function.

Okay...I'll take your word on that (Thanks) so here's one more question:  Should I pay $50 for a generic 2 Horsepower router or $90 for a DeWalt 1 1/2 Horsepower router that retails for between $150 - $250 (actual prices, not MSRP)?  Obviously this is opinion, but that's what I'm looking for because I can't make one myself based on experience with routers (I have none  :P)

P.S. Both units are new and prices include shipping.

Ok, so whats the difference between a Router and a RotoZip?  is one better than the other? I see people use one and not the other, or both.  ???  I is consused individual.

BTW, if you miss that bid, check out local pawn shops for Routers..

How much do you intend to use it? If you're buying just for this project or very light useage then get the cheaper one. If you're buying to use heavily and expect it to last a long time spend more. You didn't say what the generic one is and I have no personal experience with dewalt routers... Barring that, google them both and see if you can find some durability stats/user opinions.

Thanks for your help.  I bought the DeWalt.  The Auction for the generic router did not give a brand so I can't google it.  Everybody seems to love DeWalt tools quite a bit, though, from what I can tell and when I googled it I came up with enough evidence that I was buying it for under half-price so that was good enough for me.

Thanks again.

Dewalt is Black and Deckers Industrial Grade line.  I'm not sure if you meant your statement as a positive or a negative statement against Dewalt, lol (I guess that depends on your opinion of Black and Decker).

Black and Decker has several lines of powertools.  My favorite drill is actually a 12v Black and Decker Firestorm (which would be the middle of 3 grades) that I got from Walmart on clearance for $15.
This opinion was created from 100% post consumed information.

I'm not a big B&D fan but I love my firestorm tools.
