mouse (or trackball) works with W98, not XP
« on: April 17, 2006, 11:13:44 am »
Hello:

I just built my first CP, which contains the following -
-  Happ 3" trackball
-  Home-made Spinner
-  Ultimarc Mini-Pac (USB mode, as required for trackball / spinner).

I am running Mame32 0.104u8 on two different setups -
1.  Older P3-500 MHz running W98
2.  Modern Athlon64 3200 running XP Home

On the old W98 maching, everything works fine.  When I choose "Enable Mouse Input", the games respond appropriately to the mouse, the trackball, or the spinner.  Of course, this tired CPU can't keep up with some games.

On the XP machine however, try as I may, I cannot get Mame32 to respond to ANY of the "mouse" devices [Yes, I have checked the "Enable Mouse Input" box here too].  They all work fine while in Windows...  I can move the cursor around with all three (mouse, trackball, or spinner).  Mame32 simply doesn't see any of them.  Per some advice in this forum, I created a configuration file (Mame32 -cc), with the intent of setting "mouse 1", but it was already set up that way (probably because I already had enabled it).

Speculation:  This machine has a USB mouse, and a USB gaming keyboard (Saitek)...  Now, the Mini-Pac presents itself as USB keyboard and mouse...  Are there somehow too many of the same things over the same interface?  But why do they all work fine in Windows?

Any suggestions would be appreciated...  This is frustrating because I would like to obtain the higher performance of the better machine, but not at the expense of loosing mouse / trackball functionality.

-Thanks

When I just upgraded to v0.105 I had to go into the 'tab' menu in game for 'all games' and remap all the mouse inputs (paddle, dial, track, etc).  For some reason they were now being picked up as mouse2 (even though it was the only mouse on the system).  Try remapping the inputs in game and see if that works.

;D

Thanks Ahofle !!!
You were exactly right...

In my case, the "All Games" TAB menu settings were configured as "Mouse 1".  It turns out that the mouse in my system comes through as "mouse 2", and the trackball (via the mini-pac) is "mouse 3"

Now my only problem is stubbing my finger 'cause like an idiot I mounted the spinner too close to the trackball.  Like I said, it's my first panel...  One of the many lessons learned.
