Area 51 Cab - MAME conversion?

How easy is it MAME an existing non-working Area 51 cab?
Apparently the monitor is fine but game doesn't work.

I've done two MAME conversions already but these were on existing joystick / button cabs!

I'd be looking either to turn the cab into a MAME lightgun game cab only or replace the Control Panel and guns with a new joystick / button CP.
