How do I wire my minipac to my tornado?
« on: April 09, 2006, 09:30:34 pm »
The tornado doesn't do anything when I plug the minipac's harness right into the PCB. I'm assuming that my harness is wired for the Oscar spinner, and the wires need to be switched around in order for it to work with the tornado. Which wire goes with which?

The minipac harness has these wires, from left to right:
Black, yellow, purple, green

The tornado harness has these wires, from left to right:
Brown, red, blue, green

Where did you purchase the Tornado?  Up until recently, all the ones sold through SlikStik wouldn't connect directly to an opti-pac or a mini-pac.  And even now, I think the standard way they come is USB/PS2 unless you ask for the opti/mini-pac compatible version.

All the Tornados that Ultimarc sells are compatible with the opti/mini-pac as far as I know.

I'm not sure about the wiring.  The power and ground wires/pins shouldn't be hard to figure out by looking at the PCB.  The other two wires, just plug them in one way, if it doesn't work, then swap them.

There's a wiring diagram on this page...

I got the Tornado from Slikstik, and I selected the minipac compatible version. I looked at the PCB, but I can't find any markings near any of the pins that would indicate which pin is for grounding or power.

Just from the wire colors, I would expect red to be +5 and Brown to be ground, with the other two being your data lines.  But I wouldn't actually try and hook it up based on that, you need confirmation, as hooking up the +5 wrong could do damage.  If you can post a good pic of the optic board, I'm sure somebody can figure it out.

I sure hope the +5 is in the right place, because the first thing I did was plug the harness head into the PCB as it was. Unfortunately, I don't have a digital camera, so I can't take a picture.
