Color PDA Jukebox frontend...?
« on: April 07, 2006, 09:18:16 am »
OK, after looking at nyconx post for the 10" touchscreen purcahse he made, I thought about taking it one step further and getting a touchscreen, color PDA that can run windows CE; or linux if I hack, but I was looking for some feedback from the jukeboxer's out there if what I wanted to do was feasible.
Obviously the PDA won't have enough storage to store songs and Im not looking for an iPod I just want to have the PDA act as the frontend for the jukebox. The PDA I purchase will have bluetooth or some other wireless communication so it can talk back to a PC that will actually play the song selected from the PDA. I'm not sure if there are any jukeboxes that will run on MS CE...??? But I just want to have the PDA run the pretty jukebox selection graphics/controls and pass that information back to the doer PC. Basically a trciked out remote  ;D any feedback is appreciated, for the type of PDA or app I might think about using...

If you PDA have a browser, you may use a html based frontend, that connect to winamp or such. I save a user on arcadecab.com, that have guide to winamp based one.

I have planned for this feature in AMB, but is one would been some month in the feature, or may never made.
Decade Old Work: MultiFE, ArcadeMusicBox
Today Works: Various Spectrum Next games from Rusty Pixels and html5 games.

What you are looking for is a program called meedio housebot (www.meedio.com). It will do exactly what you want as far as mp3 control and then some. Second, you might want to try out netremote which just recently got bought out by the people who own girder (http://www.promixis.com/) - Both solutions will offer the end result you are looking to achieve. Let me know how you make out or if you get stuck somewhere along the way - Manny

Nin - I think the VNC solution might be a little much I don't know how much overhead it would take to run vnc on a pda guess I'd need to look at that.

What I was able to do is I found a winamp app called clamp.exe which controls winamp via the command line. I then wrote a cgi web page that passed the command line options and viola it worked. Though, I don't have as many features as I'd like but it is easily configurable if you know html.

Cesnwk - I'll take a look at those apps you mentioned see what they offer feature wise, thanks...

vnc will works there are alot of optmised vnc programs for pocket pc

cesnwk programs are probably a better solution ;)

i know there is a plugin for winamp that uses tinyhttp or something that runs a webserver for your winamp to control and add music to was done ages ago when ppl use to do radio casts on the net that might give you more feature than the one you made or atleast let u see how they coded the features :)

may i ask why you want your pda to be a jukebox is it just to have for around the house? or ur got a idea to use it for something?

Well I have my PC connected to my stereo system that I have speakers for throughout the house; including the garage. So the PDA is a nice remote control for the system. I borrowed a friends PDA as I don't have one yet, now I'm looking for a pda with wireless capabilties cheap, ebay is still a little pricy but I may go with one of the pda phones just not use the phone part...

That is exactly what I am looking for a cheap PDA for.  Please post what you end up going with.
