Mame wigging out on me

Mame will sometimes freeze while loading a rom.  After some troubleshooting I found that it only happens whenever I load a rom that (I'm guessing) has a different resolution than my desktop or previously ran rom.  Any way I can run all roms on a standard resolution?  Will that make some look really bad?  Does my desktop have to match mame's resolution?
