Mame's press left then right message
« on: April 06, 2006, 03:52:09 pm »
Does anyone know how to disable (if able to) the intro message when you load a rom that asks you to press any key or to press left and right?

The only way I know how to get rid of it is to press the joystick left, and then right  :-\

I was wondering the same thing, though.

i believe you have to edit the source code for that.

It used to allow you to bypass with a command line switch I believe, but that was removed.  I sure hope PowerMAME revives this.

you can skip some of the disclaimers by altering the mame.ini file. Other error messages cannot be stopped (at least in older versions.. I'm not using a recent version) unless you compile your own version of mame.

It only does it once now so its not as bad as it used to be.

But yes, nice to get rid of....   I think mameplus does it.

Awesome, Farmboy.  So is this going to be part of PowerMame?  Or does this make the mamedevs unhappy?

If it was up to me it would be.  My solution is different than most people's because it does NOT remove these screens.   It simply adds BACK into MAME the support for the configuration flags.  The user can choose to enable them or disable them.

For some reason this is a big religious issue.   ::)  And I don't care what the decision is, since I will just make this change on  my own anyway.

At any rate, I don't think this will be in PowerMAME.  I offered to add it and provided the tiny source change but it seems the powers that be don't want to go there.

I'm pretty sure you can just add the switch -frames 1 or something like that (anything less than a certain number is just a test mode that disables all warning screens), and through the process of some crazy math, 2 is subtracted from 1 and it shows -1 frames, which is impossible, so the game plays normally, although it's technically in a test mode.

If you put any number other than 1, it exits after that many frames.

don't shoot me if i've got this one wrong.

And yes, MameDevs want this message appear.

See, "-[no]skip_gameinfo" and "-[no]skip_disclaimer"...

http://www.mame.net/readmewin.html

The default is "-noskip_gameinfo" and "-noskip_disclaimer"

I just wish there was a "-skip_selftest" option to cause games to skip the selftest at boot time (but that would be a little difficult since each game would have implement this by hacking the boot sequence).

This is happening actually.  It may already be done, I haven't checked in on the thread in a while.  But over in the Software forum there was some work being done to document the number of frames each games uses for the boot sequence.  That could all be tabulated in a file and then the code could be changed to skip those frames when loading that game.

I think it was going to be in PowerMAME.  Not sure of the current status though.

from:
http://www.powermame.com/pmwiki.php?n=Features.DisclaimerOptions

"For MAME 0.79 thru 0.99u2, the last two screens may also be bypassed by either sending "-ftr 1" after the game name, or by adding "Frames to Run 1" to either the mame.ini file or the individual gamename.ini file. (Thanks to Howard Casto for discovering this). "

I'm (NOT) still using this in .104 with success.

I have to hit "OK" (or right/left joystick) every time on many games before they'll start.  Not just the first time they're loaded.

EDIT: to note that I'm using .55   Yes it's old, but so am I :)

Older versions of MAME require you to press "OK" everytime the game is run.  Newer versions of MAME only require to you to do it once, the first time you run it.

One of the advantages to older versions of MAME is that it starts up a bit quicker than the more recent versions.  Try running one of the really old DOS versions of MAME and compare the startup time to the most recent version of MAME.

You could get a couple of these and label them o and k and mount them smack dab in the center of your CP. And you could make em blink so you know right where they are.  ;)

I'm gonna get a freakin' complex if someone doesn't respond to this.    :banghead:

if you use these options:

mame invinco -skip_disclaimer -skip_gameinfo -skip_validitychecks -ftr 1

you will never get any screens.  NEVER.  EVER.

I'm thinking 'bout making the OK cab.
The control panel would ONLY contain two of these buttons.
No joysticks, spinners, nothin'.

You just keep hitting "O" then "K".
That would some awesome fun!

well, at a minimum i don't have a complex anymore.   ;)   Here's what i found:  I am in fact running a .96 version of mame, and a 104 version of mame32.  This would explain the aforementioned errors when running with 104.

HOWEVER...  (let me try this again)

I'm running Mame32 v.94.  I go to Options->Default Game Options, select the Misc. tab, and check the "Skip Disclaimer" box.

Gosh, doesn't anyone at least look at the options of the software. :banghead:

Gosh doesn't anyone at least read the thread before replying to it?  ;)
THAT OPTION WAS RECENTLY REMOVED FROM MAME.  The last few revisions of MAME have some important fixes like perfect sound in Phoenix, so I don't want to go to an older version (before you ask).  ::)

Learn to re-compile, and all is well. I don't need to specify any command line options!

And thank the Mamedevs for Phoenix - that is one of my favorite games, I've been waiting for quite some time. Now... Star Wars Trilogy!!!
