Backspin/Opti-Wiz Questions
« on: April 03, 2006, 08:37:08 pm »
I have a few questions about the connection and performance of the Betson Trackball I am going to be buying:

What is the best way to not have backspin or odd movements with a fast spin, my mouse will move oddly when snapped quickly, it is a logitec usb mouse.

Would the opti-wiz be better than a mousehack for performance, and if not, which mouse is best to hack?

Do I need a cable to hook my opti-wiz up to my trackball?

I would like to be able to play games smoothly and have it work well with hard spins as well as light movement, Golden Tee and other games.

Any other input is welcome as well.

I found that the Opti-Wiz had less trouble with backspin than my mouse hack, but that it was possible to create it with either, if you spun hard enough.  Setting the "Analog Sensetivity" in MAME correctly cuts down on the problem.  Different games will require a different setting, even with the exact same hardware, so you'll have to play with the settings separately for each game.

Which mouse to hack:  Ball-type mice.  A really expensive (when it was new) gaming mouse would probably be better than a 99 cent piece of junk, but other than that, who knows?  I doubt there's any big difference between a $15 mouse and a .99 mouse, as far as the electronics go.

You don't need a cable to hook up your trackball if you don't mind cutting off the connector and soldering the wires from your TB directly to the interface.  If you want to just plug it in, then yes.

The trackball booster kits from GroovyGameGear have been reported to improve GoldenTee.  I don't play GT, so I dunno about that firsthand, but it makes sense that they would.
