Volume control buttons on CP...
« on: March 30, 2006, 10:01:15 pm »
I want to make two of my admin buttons into volume controls (up and down). Now I have these on the keyboard attached to my ipac, but I'd like to be able to adjust it without opening the CP and I'm not using the two buttons anyways.

I'm not sure exactly what to tell the ipac to make these two buttons. It isn't a character that registers when I hit the volume control keys on the keyboard.

Any ideas?

Thanks, but I'd like to avoid installing any extra software if at all possible.

Since they are keys on the keyboard they have to register at the computer as something. I just need to know what they register as so I can program my ipac.

I think the quick buttons on keyboards are beyond what the ipac can do.  I don't know for sure though.

By default volume up in Mame is = and volume down is -

So go into your IPAC programming and map those buttons to = and -.  Just wire them to unused slots on the IPAC like sw7 and 8 or player 1 or 2.

What about having a volume knob? I believe on Oscar's site there is a writeup on how to solder a pot to have a nice volume knob. That's what I got :)

Is it possible to remove the volume knob from your PC speakers and attach it to the outside of your CP? Has anyone done this?

Yes. It works really well. Highly recommended and relatively easy to do.

Why not connect a button as the "`" key, then use left and right to adjust the volume? Of course, this would be a Mame only solution...

You could I guess.  But for the effort it wasn't worth it to me.  So I spent about $1.50 buying a potentiometer from radio shack and wired the speakers in line with that.  That is the best solution, in my opinion, when compared to having dedicated control panel buttons for this.

There are DIY electronic kits that you can wire an up and down button to and will emulate a potmeter. This would solve your problem nicely.

If you have a soundblaster live there is a header on the board for digital volume controls.
