Questions concerning byo PC sites...
« on: February 24, 2003, 10:17:21 am »
Ok, it's time for the hardware...I don't have a spare pc around, and don't really have enought useful componts either.  I've been looking on tigerdirect.com and accessmicro.com for complete or barebones bundles, but I'm not 100% sure what I'm looking for, or if I can trust these online places.  Here's what I'm looking to get:

1. AMD Athlon 1700/1800+ processor
2. 516 Megs o' Ram (DDR or SDRAM?)
3. mobo with a free AGP slot & >2 USB pts.
(I bought a DDR-compatible ATi 7000 AGP w/ S-vid for my cab, so the slot will be necessary!)
4. Sound's almost always integrated, right?
5. fans, heatsink, all the other normal stuff, ports, etc...
6. No OS needed (prob. going with XP pro)

I'm pretty sure I can do this for under $400, based on my research, and also necesitated my my budget!

Anyone recommend a trustworthy and inexpensive online (or even retail) store to me?  I'm really outa my element with this kind of stuff...  Thanks!!
Now witness the power of this FULLY OPERATIONAL Mame machine!

I've ordered parts for two Athlon XP PC's from newegg.com and I've been satisfied with the price and product.

newegg usually has pretty good prices...
also www.googlegear.com is pretty decent..

both are fairly reputable.. i have purchased or know someone who has purchased from both vendors..  you might want to take a look at both of those sites.. they should be able to beat tiger direct's prices..

I can vouch for newegg.com and googlegear myself.
I have bought from newegg several times and googlegear once and had no problems with either one.
A good reference is http://www.resellerratings.com

New egg has been good to me, good prices, good shipping, received exactly what I expected.

Carefull with pricewatch, some of the vendors are shady.
