CHDs and PC processors
« on: March 20, 2006, 01:26:24 pm »
Hey Gang,
Not sure how many of you are playing CHD games on your PCs but I'm going to post the question anyway.

To those that are playing CHD games on your PC
What are you running for Processor/Memory/OS/FrontEnd?

There are a number of CHD games I'd like to play but in talking to some
I have come to the conclusion that my PC may not cut it.

What are you guys running?
Thanks for the info.

A lot of PCs won't cut it.

Think someone said to run Cruisin' you'd need like an 8 Ghz processor.
But wasn't it fun to think you won the lottery, just for a second there???

Most .chd games won't play on modern hardware.

Area 51,  Maximum Force,  and the others that came out around that time work,  as does Carnevil until it hits bugs.

But the remainder,  Wayne Gretzky,  Blitz,  NBA,  the fighters,  Judge Dredd,  Gauntlets,  the Driving games,  they all won't play at anywhere near good fps.

That's on a 4200+ with 2 gigabytes of ram.  I'll get around 12fps on most of those.  Even OC'd to 2.5ghz I can't get beyond 15fps...

I was thinking that it wouldn't be that bad.
Oh well!

On the up side with processor speeds getting faster and faster if you archive your collection of CHds now it sounds like we maybe able to play these games sometime between 2008 and 2010 at 30fps.

Thanks for the help.

Gatt, try turning the sound emulation off, you will get much better speeds... and some people have reported good speeds on Cruisn..... i can get Cruisn running decently on my 1.8 Centrino....

Although I am not going to dig into the architectures of the different CHD games.  I would be really surprised if most (if not all) are not based on the ZN1/2, System 11.   That said, Zinc is out.

Pretty much, if it is a Playstation or Namco game; you got a chance.  Midway does not fit in that category.

I'm not familiar with ZINC.
But it sounds like you think it may help in playing some of the CHDs.

Got any more info, or know if anyone has tried this yet?

I'd love to find a way to get these things up and running.

Thanks.

I think what I saw said somewhere aroung 5 Ghz.

Crusin' isn't a CHD game, btw, and it is faster in later versions of MAME.
