Mapping ZINC controls...
« on: March 19, 2006, 03:54:47 pm »
What is the best way for mapping ZINC controls?  I'm using MAMEwah as a front end.

Thanks!

This isn't related specifically or soley to you so don't take it personally but.....

[rant]
What in the world does the front end you use have to do with an emulator related issue?  In case you don't know I'll tell you.  Nothing, nada, zip, zilch, zero....period!

I'm sorry but after three years of "my video card doesn't work with zinc... oh btw I'm using mamewah as my front end" I've finally snapped.

A windows front end launches games... THAT'S IT!  Unless your problem involves the launching of a game/emulator then what frontend you use has NOTHING TO DO WITH YOUR PROBLEM!!!

The sad thing is, it's only mamewah users who tend to do this.  I know you guys aren't dumb, but when you do stuff like that it sure appears that way.
[/rant]

The easiest way to reconfigure zincs controls is to download one of the zinc front ends and do it through it.  Remember though that once it makes a cfg file for you you'll still have to point to it in the command line you use to launch zinc.

Delicious irony that you lambast him for mentioning his front end, then your answer involves using a different front end.  ;D

That said, I'm assuming you can use a zinc front end to configure the controls then NOT use it anymore? Is that correct? (assuming you reference the config file in the command line, as you mentioned)

Correct...personally I use Aldo's FE.  However I've never had to pointeto the cfg file in the commandline...

I think the point that I was trying to make is that I do not want to use a "different" front end to launch zinc. I want to launch it through mamewah...

I'm just trying to find the easiest way to get a ctrl config file for my cabinet because the default controls obvisouly do not work with my cabinet...

Still looking...

Yeah , Read more carefully.  Just use Aldos Front End to setup your config, then after that no need to use it anymore, they config will be saved, and you can use mamewah to launch zinc.

Hi there.

If what you want is to have the same key mappings as in mame, maybe this controller.znc will do the trick.  Just rename from controller.txt to controller.znc and you're done.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Congui

Well, now that I've installed Zinc in my cabinet, it loads up in MAMEWAH(!!!@) just fine, however....

After using Aldo's FE to set the controls, they only work for some games (I haven't tested them ALL)... but  street fighter, xevious, tekken work, but mr driller doesn't??

What am I missing?

Again, thanks for any help!

All games load up fine and run, just the controls don't work right...

I'm having a similar problem: got the fighting games and xevious working but can't get Monster Farm Jump to recognize a button. This FE has no documentation and a horrible gui. I'm stuck.

I asked this question a while back and never got an answer...

http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=47008.0

The issue here is, you use Aldo's FE to map the controlls, but then when you run Mamewah, the control settings no longer work.  Specifically - all i want is street fighter EX (to start with) and if you launch using mamewah (using minwah's suggestion on the mameworld.net forums) and Howard's wrapper, either the .cfg file is not loaded, or it is not recognizing it.....

I understand this should NOT be a FE issue, but that being said, if the .cfg works with Aldo's FE and Mamewah is simply loading zinc with with its default settings (that i assume Aldo's FE writes to .cfg file) it should work like every other one on my cab but it doesnt.

I assumed that zinc uses a different .cfg file by default or none at all and therefore the .cfg file is for aldo's FE only...

But i dont know since i have scoured these forums and others and cant find an aswer.   :'(

I have to disagree with you joe jet, I'm configuring in the Aldo front end and launching from Mamewah and the changes I'm making ARE showing up just fine. Street fighter, Tekken are fine and after some trial-and-error, Xevious 3d is fine. I just can't find a way to make Monster Farm Jump recognize a button. It doesn't help that Aldo's button names are all "punch" and "kick" varieties instead of "button 1, button 2, etc"

Well Surf is having the same problem i am having with Street fighter, so it is either a bug or has to do with the sequence of installation i chose...

I was going to wipe it out and reinstall, but i never even got an answer to my question about what/where the actual .cfg file is located (yes i know there is a control.cfg or something in the root but ther are also other game .cfgs elsewhere) and i got discouraged.  Seeing others with the same problem at least lets me know i am not a total Noob

Well, I'm focusing on getting Mr Driller to work (just a couple buttons and joystick)...

When I run it, even start and coin don't work...

I've deleted the game config, swapped control.znc files and nothing!

It just puzzles me why the fighting games work great, but others don't???

Still searching...

Maybe someone knows of a different way to map controls instead of using Aldo's FE???

I've tried everything trying to get it to work right, but only the fighting games, and a few others work!

Thanks to anyone that can help...

Aldo does have his own forum. You could try posting there, surf.

I've given up. I reinstalled and my daughter plays Monster Farm Jump and that's about all I use Zinc for.  :banghead:

okay, this topic REALLY needs to get a sticky made for it.  To solve your problem just download the newest winterblast plugin.  The old plugins have this problem.   http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=47008.0

To settle this once and for all here is the correct controller.znc file.  just copy this over the one you have in your zinc directory.  I've also added my controller.cfg file (setup for slikstik button layout) as a reference.

Well that's not the only issue unfortuantely, some of the zinc front-ends haven't been updated in a while and thus they only adjust half of the games (as the namco and zn games have seperate inputs).  Unfortunately it's been too long since I've ran zinc ragularly and thus I can't remember which.

Yeah, you'll have to do the controller.cfg manually.  But it's relatively simple and I've given mine as an example to follow.

I was writing a utility, but it's on the bottom of my 20,000 projects I still have to finish.

Ugh, now if I only had a team of trained coing monkeys at my disposal..... or interns..... >:D

I was curious so I looked into it....

Turns out if you wish to play EVERY zinc game and play them well, remapping is quite complicated.

There isn't a universal layout that'll take care of all the games.

I decided to take a break from my other projects and write that configuration utility.  To give you an idea of just how complicated it is, so far I've found 7 distinct layouts and I'm not even done yet.

I'll keep you guys posted, but to do it right (which at this point no one has been willing to do) It'll take a while.
