Push it into a diagonal and see if it can trigger 2 switches at once...

8-way can trigger 2 at once, 4-way can't...

If it's in a disassembled state see if there is any kind of restrictor plate around the shaft of the joystick. By that I mean is there a palstic or metal plate with a square cutout(points toward the corners), or a diamond(points of the square straight up & down, left&right)
If it's square it's likely to be 8way, if its a diamond, it's a 4way

Have you read any of the faq that is the basis of this web site? You really should theres a lot of good information here that will help you understand things like 4 way or 8 way joysticks. Some joysticks are even switchable and can do both.
My statements are my own opinions. They have the value that the reader gives them. My opinion of my opinion varies between foolish and brilliant and these opinions often change with new information.
