What to do? Seller doesn't take Paypal
« on: March 11, 2006, 09:24:37 pm »
What do you folks do when the seller of a non ebay item doesn't have a Paypal account?  How do you send the funds?  Are there any other options?  I've heard that you could cancel a money order.  Is that true?

Any opinions/suggestions?

A postal money order can be tracked. I had an issue with an ebay seller once and because it was a postal money order I was able to prove he recieved it and cashed it and even got a scan of the cashed money order. I wound up getting my item after I sent the person that scan that I had prooph they cashed it.

If you're in the same country as the seller, send a cheque.... Your bank has a record of the transaction. It can only be cashed by the seller and if they don't send the goods you can have your bank recall the funds.

Try COD (Cash on Delivery)  Used this method a few times.  No problems.  You ship item and the Delivery guy collects payment before handing item over.

The one time I had to do this I also opted for a Postal Money Order.  I also sent it where they had to sign to receive the delivery of said money order.

another useful sight is bidpay.com it send an actual money order through the mail for you, save a little time over the definatly superior postal money orders that are trackable and fully refundable.

All nice and well, and big names always get banged, but for us Europeans Paypal is the only fast and relatively cheap way (apart from direct Credit Cards payment of course) to get money to (f.i.) the U.S.

F.i. for me it's quite sad that Bob Roberts doesn't accept PayPal. Sending old-fashened things like "money orders" or "bank drafts" is not the way I imagine this should work in the year 2006. (Let alone that bank employees will understand what you want them to do).

Transfering money through banks internationaly is insanely expensive. (The situation for Europe (that is the EEC countries) improved a lot howerver a couple of years ago, we can now do FREE bank transfers between all EEC countries, directly through internetbanking).

Bob also suggests Western Union ....I don't even want to know how much they charge and all the insane hassle I have to do (go to a post-office, stand in line, explain to a zombie what I want to do, etc. etc.)

I'm not blaiming Bob for this situation !!! It's his right to choose, but I only want to give some arguments PRO PayPal !!!

Blabla....a lot of trash thrown around by former employees (kicked out maybe ?)

I'm using PayPal now for a couple of years and have never had a problem. Yes they charge money for their service, so what ? That's what companies do, make money.
As long as it's a lot more convenient than bank hassle and also a lot cheaper, I'm fine with PayPal.

OK that sucks...

I'd like to see a world-wide system like we have here in Europe now. But that's probably a dream for the coming years....
This actualy is one of the (few) good things the EEC has accomplished (and forced upon the banks !). It's crazy that the banks don't realise how stimulating this is for international trade on the small scale....

The fastest way to stop theft/fraud through a PayPal account is to freeze it so no further "damages" can occur. If Paypal didn't do this, when they had some knowledge of possible fraudulent activity, they could be liable for the damages occuring after they first find out. So they freeze accounts to be "better safe than sorry". So what happens? Some innocent people can have their account frozen. So they say "Paypal sucks".

But then if Paypal adopted the opposite position, one where they need absolute 100% proof before freezing an account, you'd STILL have another group of victims saying "Paypal sucks" because they lost money through ID theft, or whatever and Paypal didn't act fast enough.

Either way Paypal will be criticized. People want their cake and to eat too.

What's the interest rate on that card? MUCH higher than Paypal's fees, I know that without even knowing what your interest rate is. That means the CC company can afford greater risks (and probably better insurance as well).
