Protective layer for cabinet finish
« on: February 21, 2003, 06:48:11 am »
I was hoping to put a protective coating over the paint job on my MAME cab.. it chips way too easily in the corners of the doors.. what was it again that's good for that..?  I believe it was polyurethane but I can't find the kind that is for coating paint jobs, just the bare wood stuff.. Is clear coat spraypaint the same thing?  (May be easier to just cover the t-molding and use a spray anyways at this stage.. the painted metal hinges are chipping a bit, too)

Ugh.. recessed doors and painted hinges.. lesson learned :(

Clear coat is what you want. You should be able to find some that you brush or roll on but the spray should work to. I'm not sure it will help you a lot. If the paint is flaking off its often because it didn't get a good bond and covering it won't help a lot. Can't hurt though...

If you want to get fancy, apply an acrylic isolation coat.  Golden Paints sells a product called "soft-gel" in gloss, matte, or semi-gloss.  We used it for an outdoor sculpture project here in DC.

It basically is the same as their acrylic paints, but with no pigment.

You should be able to find it at any art store.
