speakers??
« on: March 10, 2006, 11:25:19 am »
Am I correct in assuming that its easier to hack a pair of computer speakers than buying some and hooking them up??  Computer speakers you just take apart and plug in with an 1/8 jack.  I know they should be shielded but if I buy just speakers how do you wire them up?

Thanks

Either way you need to hack PC speakers because you'll need the amp.

So buy two good arcade speakers (8 ohm, 5 watt is plenty), and then get yourself a cheap set of PC speakers from a used goods store. Rip it open, wire the new speakers in place of the old little speakers.

NO MORE!!

Wouldn't it be easier to get a 2.1 PC speaker set with the remote volume control?
That way, the only thing you'd have to worry about is how to mount the speakers.

I did the 2.1 hack & replaced sat. speakers with the happ shielded speakers & it works perfect plus the 5" speakers fit in the holes on my slikstik, you can also get speaker cover from happ for about 4.00 that cover up the speakers
thanks

I'm not sure how "cheap" you want to but here's what I'm using for the cabinet I'm currently working on.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00009W44B/sr=8-2/qid=1142034414/ref=pd_bbs_2/102-0123585-9974530?%5Fencoding=UTF8

Personally, I like it because; 1) it's cheaper than a car amp, 2) It runs off 110VAC (with an adapter) and 3) It gives you a ton of flexibility as to the kind of speakers you can use.

Just my opinion.

That looks to big for my cocktail cabinet.

I think I will just hack some speakers and buy some from HAPPs

Did you see the dimensions?  It's 7" x 3".  Itty-bitty.  You could put this thing in a bartop!

Any pair of working PC speakers will do. Even a $5 pair. All you want is the amp in it. Just make sure they are not so old that the volume knob causes "static" noise.

Can't that usually be remedied by simply cleaning the pot?

Bob Roberts sells shielded arcade speakers for $4 each, last time I checked.

Here's some threads on my PC speaker hack...

I decided to hack a pair of USB powered speakers.  That way, I didn't need to plug in a separate power brick.  Read the threads above for the whole saga.

I wanted something that sounded fairly decent for the music I'm running on a jukebox program so I  went with a creative 2.1 set that ran me  $66 including shipping from buy.com.It's got a wired remote but I wasn't keen on its looks for mounting so I hacked into it and removed the on-off volume pot from the circuit board and extended it with longer wires and used a pot from mouser.com that was more suitable to mount .
