Custom Side Art?
« on: February 19, 2003, 02:29:31 pm »
How have people managed to do custom side art? Is there a well known printer who will print images in large stickers like I have seen or are people managing it some other way. I really don't want to paint it, as I don't have artistic ability and don't have access to anyone who does. Plus I know the guy at www.scottishninjas.com and think I can get permission to use his art. If you've never seen it, its fantastic.

Excellent website.

The short answer is "yes".

You want a service bureau, and you want them to print the art on self adheasive stock of some sort. Once you find a service bureau, they will be able to show you examples of different sorts of media they have available. Just tell them what you are doing. They have a lot of experience. Expect to spend at least $10 a square foot.

well..i have a better idea..not sure if would work out but i might be building another cabinet and here is my plan.

make a cab that comes in 2 pieces and only the top side pieces will have side art...i will get some very good looking sticker type paper(from chinatown hobby shops) then first apply that then print some street fighter, marvel images and add them over the sticker and then a plexi glass..i have seen someone over here(local friend) do similer stuff and it loooks great.

it can easyly be done with home printer and some photo paper...i will post when i am near complete.

If you use sticker paper, you'll probably waant to go over it with something to protect the paper from dirt, moisture, etc.  Most side art is printed on vinyl.

I missed the plexiglass part.   I don't think I've ever seen plexi on the side of a cabinet... should be interesting!

I can print the side art you need, if the art is over 13" wide it comes in two pieces of real sticker vinyl. Its printed with pigment based ink, not dye like ink jets use, it wont fade. I can also print back lit film for marquees etc. even the bigger x-men and street fighter marquees, but any marquee you need. I can also design it for you as part of the process. If preferred I can give a lite coat of urethane, but it isn't paper, so it is water resistant already, and so is the pigment based color printing, you can pour water on it and it wont bleed, fade etc. Also you can print in two sections like a billboard and print any size you need, but this is using roll based film and vinyl, so it can be up to 40 FEET tall or wide, but that's never needed. www.tablecade.com will soon have the option to get marquees for any project. Also all weather adhesive backed vinyl can be laid over an existing Control panel or side of any cabinet. One cool thing to do is put a new sticker of the same side art over the old sticker. Yes the best way is to remove the old sticker but that's a quick way to fix a problem.
Anyone else who needs marquees, cp overlays, side are of any kind please email me. By the way Kinkos will NOT print copy written stuff, but I will! Also know a real arcade fan's standards are at work here, the back lit film is as good as a real marquee. Another option id using adhesive backed vinyl print stuck on to Plexiglas, it works great, totally authentic looking, none of that terrible paper grain showing that an ink jet leaves. The prints are 2400 dpi, zero grainyness, continuous color reproduction. I am still costing it out, but side art should run about $39.00 per side on 8 mil adhesive backed vinyl ready to peel and apply.

My inkjet uses pigments not dye.  It's resolution is 1440x1440 and I can print up to 50" wide without a seam.

Sounds like you might be usin a Gerber Edge creepfactory.
Those things are kinda grainy aren't they?

No I am not using the Gerber, yes those are grainy, mine are good enough photographers have prints made with it. I also print limited edition art prints from it, so its flawless, even with a magnifying glass it still looks good, and only with a magnifying glas can you make out any dots at all

Hey PoDunk!

Any chance on you offering a BYOAC printing deal?
I know I'd sure be interested.  Creepfactory's deal would be OK, but I don't want to seam 2 or 3  pieces together ('cuz I KNOW i'll *@#$$ it up ) and 13" just doesen't seem wide enough.
plus, always willing to thow a fellow parrot some buisiness....

I am currently working on putting together some prices.
I am trying to find the right combination of materials that would provide both quality and accuracy in terms of matching what would be found on an arcade machine.  I am also trying to put this combination together at an attractive price that doesn't break me.

I am also thinking of offering marquees backsurface onto polycarb material.

Why is it that screen printing(as opposed to ink-jet) is usually not mentioned in these discussions? Is it because of the cost?

Thanks.

---EDIT---

I planed on modding the UA2 design but things didnt work out.
After playing around for a while I realized UA2 looks great anyway so why bother changing the design.

Yes it is.

The bulk of the cost of screenprinting is in the setup and screen prep.  For this reason it is mostly an option when you are considering large quantities.  Same thing for 4 color offset.  In these cases if you are ordering a large quantity the cost of setup is divided over the quantity and therefore offset.  When you only want a few or one in the case of a marquee or control panel it would cost a fortune for screenprinting or 4 color offset.

Process used to print brouchures, poster, cartons, etc.  I think it uses plates not screens.  Not sure on that.

Creepfactory's site is gone.   And We never heard back from PoDunk with prices...   any update on this?
