newbie monitor question

I've got 2 games that need monitor work.  One needs a cap kit and the other (25 inch) needs a new tube I think.  It flickers but nothing shows up.  I'm a little leery of discharging the monitor to bring it to someone to work on.  There's a local guy that charges $60 an hour plus parts.  Would I really be saving a lot of  money by taking these out myself or should I have him do a home repair.  I expect it to cost between 2 - 3 hundo.  Any advice?

What are your actual faults,Why do you think you need a cap kit for the first and the second dont sound like the tube to me,more info is required to diagnose your actual faults,take photos of the faults,what type of chassis you have and any history to these faults would help alot.

Here's how I see your options.

1. Have the guy service it at home (no hassles, lots of $$$)

2. Take the monitor to him. No need to discharge it. Just unbolt it and handle it by the frame. You only need to discharge it if you are disconnecting or working on the chassis/electronics.  (some hassle in removing and transporting, lots of $$$)

3. Find a local collector who will do the capkit and/or tube swap for a lot less. Check the RGVAC newsgroup or ask on these forums.  (not as many $$$).

4. Discharge the monitor and do your own capkit.  They aren't that hard. I've heard that tube swaps aren't that hard especially if you use the yoke that is on the tube.  (lots of hassle and fun doing it yourself, not much $$$).
