Building a star wars yoke...have a question
« on: March 01, 2006, 08:07:38 pm »
I searched and I believe the last post here tells me exactly what I am thinking, but I want to be sure.
http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=45490.0

I have read through this    http://arcadecontrols.com/hosted/yoke/
for info on how to do it, and have been using Autocad to draft up the plans and making a few small changes.

Anyway, teh guide says use (2) 40 tooth gears and (2) 20 tooth gears.  I am assuming the tooth count isn't important, but that the 2:1 ratio is what is needed.

2:1 ratio should do fine. Make sure to post your project, I attempted to make one of these and gave up for a while: I can't cut wood worth crap. At least I have all the parts to make it when I finally get around to trying again. Must practice more with the scroll saw...

Must practice more with the scroll saw...

Forget the scroll saw.
Draw your target line, rough cut the wood with a circular saw, and then sand it down to the line with either a belt sander, or a sanding attachment for your drill.

I usually end up having to come behind my jigsaw/bandsaw/scrollsaw with a sander anyway, due to blade deflection.

I don't think there's 90 degrees of travel forward and back the originals.  There was a thread once where somebody measured it, but I'll be darned if I can remember where it is.  Anyone?

Ok- it probably isnt 90 degrees each way, becasue you would end up with nearly 360-degree movement.  But 45 seems to little, gives about 270-degrees, I made a quick sketch to show what 45-degrees looks like.  Maybe go to 60-degrees.....

That might work. I would think though, with the windows calibration you could compensate for the difference. It may affect gameplay slightly, but should still be quite playable...

Oh, from your earlier post, I thought you were talking about the forward-and-back motion of the handles, used to aim in Star Wars.  Your pics make me think you're talking about the right-to-left motion of the steering instead.  That might be closer to 90.

There must be somebody with a real SW yoke that can take measurements for you.  I could try mine, but it's not from SW, and might not match.

In  my earlier post I was talking about the forward and back motion, I think I have that all hammerred out, was just looking for more knowledge on the x-axis rotation (left to right).

just to be sure i don't miscommunicate: from the zero point, you can rotate it 70 degrees in each direction, so the full range of motion would be 140 degrees.
