upgrading cabinet to cater for 4 players?
« on: February 27, 2006, 11:33:39 am »
howdy there - first post! this site looks ace - loads of info!
well, just purchased my first cabinet - a jamma one which is already modified for mame.

it currently holds 2 player controls (2 joysticks and 12 buttons) but i was wondering how hard (if poss) it is to add 4 player controls. obvioulsy, the unit is not big enough as standard (being only 57cm wide) so would need some modification to the cabinet itself. is this quite easily done?

eg if i were to get a slikstik quad, would it be poss to rip old the old stuff and somehow add the unit to the cabinet?!

You should take  apic.... to give everyone a better idea.

Cabient is small. If you will rebuild him on 4 players you will find on this
side.

What kowal so elegantly was attemting to say is that the conversion to a 4 way cab will be difficult at best.  So much that I would keep this one for 2 players and buy a much bigger cab or plan on making one.  Most 4 player cabs have larger monitors and much larger Control Panels.  Modifying the CP on the cab you have would involve rasing it up (or cutting out the existing sides) and adding 12 inches or so in either direction.  It would really stick out and players would have a hard time seeing the monitor.

Some folks just add USB ports and plug in gamepads for players three and four.

You could in essence build a 4 player franken panel for it, but it is not recommended.

gully -- I like the look of that cabinet ... nice and clean.

I would suggest leaving it as is for a while before you make any decisions (and game pads are a good alternative). I bet you find that you like it the way it is.

Cheers.

I must say that the link Kowal posted is mighty funny...

At least I know things to be careful of when I make mine in the next few months!

THANKS!

hey guys (gals?!) thanks for the replies. there seems to be a general concessus that it aint big enough to expand, and I can totally understand that. i really liked the ideas about just using a joypad which is what i will do temporarily, however, the big plan is to make a bigger cabinet with a bigger screen!

whoops, there goes my savings!!

cheers all
