Xbox FPS'ers
« on: February 17, 2003, 01:27:08 pm »
Whats a good xbox fps game? I love Halo but we are getting bored with the maps. I want something thats more like counterstrike on the PC. I went and bought Ghost Recon last week but thats squad based tactics. I didn't realize that before I bought it, probably should have rented it first.  :-\ I want something more like counterstrike. I can't worry about what my other 2 guys are doing. When one of them takes out a target I don't get the feeling that I accomplished anything.

I don't want unreal tournament and I am dissapointed in Mechassault. Many of the things that made mechwarrior a good game on the PC were left out of mechassault on the xbox. I was never a big mechwarrior fan any way.

Splinter cell looks like a sweet game but I need multiplayer.

In summary what I want is to play counterstrike on the xbox. I had to quit playing online on the PC because the cheaters were making me mad. Mad to the point where you can't play against anyone because some people are that good but most of them are cheating or exploiting every little thing that they could. I don't mind being beat when its a level playing field. In fact I lose a lot, I just can't stand taking a beating from some punk junior high kid because he found a cheat that someone else created.
My statements are my own opinions. They have the value that the reader gives them. My opinion of my opinion varies between foolish and brilliant and these opinions often change with new information.

In general I find FPS's on the xbox frustrating becaue of the controller.  Its just no comparison to a mouse/keyboard setup.  Have you actually tried Unreal Tournament?  There are many play modes (team based sounds like what you want here).  They even have a cool "football" type mode.  Rent it and see what you think.

yeah, it takes getting use to the controller.  I got use the the ps2 controller for red faction, but there still is no interface better thana  mouse and keyboard for fps.

I'll have to go rent it. I didn't like unreal tournament on the PC. It moved to fast with to much chaos. Random fragging just because you got the biggest gun is no fun. Microsoft has ruined a few games on the xbox because of this. Cell damage moves to fast to play, whacked moves to fast. Both of those would have been ok games if they weren't moving so fast.

Halo has a bunch of team modes but you need more than 2 on 2 to play capture the flag. Halo has oddball and king of the hill. We've mostly been playing 2 on 2 with 2 xboxes. I love the xbox controller for Halo and I've been wanting to try that controller with a FPS on the PC I just haven't gotten round to it. It seems like it would work. I've been playing fps'ers since Castle Wolfenstein 3d. I played all the classiscs Quake, Quake2, Duke Nukem, ROTT, Redneck Rampage (one of my favorites), Half life and its billion addons especially Team Fotress and counterstrike. Once I started getting into the team games the random frag fest variations are only good for an occasional play.

I think the key to the xbox controller is setting your look stick sensitivity. Most people don't know that setting is there. If you crank it up you can spin around a lot faster. Crank it to far though and your guy is difficult to control. Kind of like setting your mouse sensitivity which I always had cranked to max. The problem I had with a mouse was I hated to pick it up to move it back to the center of the mouse pad. I switched to a optical thumb trackball for a long time because of that. Still had to pick my thumb up off the ball occasionally which usually happened at inopportune times. Eventually I went back to a mouse when I got an optical one that was much more sensitive and didn't decide to gum up during shoot outs.
My statements are my own opinions. They have the value that the reader gives them. My opinion of my opinion varies between foolish and brilliant and these opinions often change with new information.

There is a distinct lack of FPS on xbox.  Actually unreal championship is supposed to be pretty decent - it's more like UT2003 not the original UT.  Which means it's like team arena :)

Ugh - I could have warned you about ghost recon - I play it on my PC.  It's definitely fun and tension-filled but not fast paced.  Maybe you could trade it up for a new game.

I'd recommend Jedi Knight outcast - it's pretty fun on the PC and I can only imagine it's the same on xbox.  there are other weapons than sabers.  I hear Brute Force is the next big halo - or you could just wait for HALO 2 :)

I don't like jedi outcast, my bro-in-law has it. Its to complicated. The whole force powers thing throws off the game. To many weapons, to many moves. I've also played the new James Bond "Nightfire" game and wasn't happy with it. Same thing there, I just wasn't happy with the game play.  :-\

I just found out Half-life 2 is scheduled for release September 15 on the xbox! Half life is my all time favorite fps. The counterstrike add-on for half life is my favorite mod. This is exactly what I was looking for. I can't hardly wait! I'll be standing in line fore this one!  ;D

They are also releasing CS:condition zero, though not sure if it will be ported to xbox.  Deus Ex2 is coming out soon, too, isn't it?

I get the feeling you like CS :)  It is an awesome mod.

I get into jedi outcast especially on the large city level with narrow walkways(why don't they ever build railing?)  You can force push or pull people right off the ledges  ;D

If you're looking for a good multi-player 'mech gama, I've heard Battle Engine Aquila is good. I've played the single-player demo of it and it's pretty fun. I'm looking to buy the game now.

My favorite is to force grab and throw them off hehehe

it's best when you can get them by surprise.. like if they are pre-occupied sniping or something similar.. they don't know what hit them till they are on their way down hehe

You need to buy a PS2 and get SOCOM: US Navy Seals.  The game is insane.  If you love Counterstrike you will love this.  To me, the controls are the best FPS console controls I have ever used.

Yeah  :-\ Socom looks cool but I'm not dumping my xbox and buying another $200 console for that. Halo is really sweet I'm just looking to mix things up a little. Eventually they'll release a Socom equivalent for the x box.

Hmmm...I bet Team Fortress 2 and Duke Nukem Forever are in that list too, huh :)

But in all honestly none of those games are equivalents of Socom or Counterstrike.

Are tf2 and dnf projected to be released on the xbox or are you just being funny? I haven't played Socom so I don't know if it really is on par with counterstrike. One of the great things with counterstrike was the ability to update it and add maps and weapons and models to keep the game fresh. You can do most of that with the xbox so I think they will be able to eventually with even better graphics than the ps2 is capable of.

Hehe no I was just being funny.  TF2 and DNF are vapor.

Yes being able to add new content to a game is nice.  But I don't know how many times I have heard XBox users claim that the XBox games will support this.  There has not yet been one game that has come out for XBox after 16months on the market that allows this.  Putting a HDD in the XBox is a great idea if the games are going to take advantage of it.  It's just that developers haven't been taking advantage so all it's good for is for saving 1million saved games and ripping music to :(

I think I heard something about some of the XBoxLive games eventually going to supporting downloadable content...but like I said, still have yet to actually see it happen.

As for the feel of Socom, I think it right inbetween Counterstrike and Ghost Recon (or Rogue Spear).  Counterstrike is crazy fast with people jumping around everywhere getting headshots left and right.  Ghost Recon is slow, realistic and takes some patients to aim at the enemy before firing.  To me, I think Socom falls right inbetween the two.  You should try it sometime if you get a chance. I bet you like it.  And the whole voice command thing is awesome.  I don't know if you know about it, but when playing single player missions you can control you squad just by telling them what to do in the microphone using voice recognition :)

Ghost Recon on the Xbox is not super fast but its not slow either. If you take time to line up a shot often someone else on your squad will take out the target your aiming at. Other times they don't shoot. I've never had one of them use their secondary weapon. Its kind of frustrating. I never thought CS was crazy fast, Unreal tournament thats crazy fast with random fragging. Counterstrike required a lot more finesse. I definately agree with you that sniping and headshots were to easy in CS.

Some games have downloadable content on Live already. Splinter Cell has a new mission. Some of the sports games have updateable stats and player rankings, its coming. You can complain about how long its taking but who else is doing it on a console?

Thats good to know that at least some developers are doing it.  What sports games support that?  Madden on XBox is not online as I recall.

Tiger woods golf is doing online ranking through a web browser on a PC I don't think it supports live. It generates codes that you can post through a web browser and get your online rank. I can't find the website right now that I saw it posted on but at least one of the baseball games was doing updated player stats.
