Help me hack these speakers, please.
« on: February 20, 2006, 10:13:34 am »
I would like to use these speakers, because I have them and they sound good (they originally came with my brother in law's Compaq, but the board inside them says Altec Lansing).  However, I am puzzled as to how to make them practical inside of a cab.
They have two buttons, an up and down volume, and you must press both at the same time to power them up (they do not power up automatically if they are unplugged and then plugged back in).  When they are powered up (by pressing both buttons) they are automatically at volume 0 (no sound) and have to be turned up every time.  They do not plug directly into the wall, but receive power from the sub instead.  The board below has four, labeled wires coming off of it (up, led, down & ground).
How can I hook these up best for a cab (ie...ideally they would power on with everything else and stay at a constant volume)?  Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, as I'm stumped at this point.
Thanks.

Any ideas?

Is there any more information I could provide that might help?

It looks like the buttons are just switch closures that "make" and "break" a circuit when pressed.  Undoubtedly, these are tied into some kind to processor controlled (or at least circuit controlled) assembly that's part of the subwoofer or amp.

It seems to me, from looking at the picture at least, that these two sets of wires could probably be wired to ANY two buttons of the same type (normally open or normally closed, whatever they are) and these could include arcade buttons mounted anywhere you want.  You could then run the speaker wires to where ever you want to place the actual voice coils themselves and you should have a working set.  I would not even attempt to seperate the 'satellites' from the sub, though.  With a setup like this, they are attached at the hip.

At this point, the only way you're going to find out if this will work is to start hacking and see what you come up with.  If it doesn't work, it was worth a try.  If it does, you can celebrate.

(be sure to have beer on hand to either toast your all knowing wisdom or drown your failed sorrows).

Good luck

get some more pics of the wiring..you can probably bypass the switch all together.
