Wiring Question
« on: February 17, 2006, 09:08:31 am »
I've been putting this off but now I need to figure out how I want to power my cab.  I searched the forum and there is a lot of info about where to get the power recepticles and how to hack power strips but I was unable to find anything that fit my situation.

I'm running a computer, speakers, 27" tv and 18" fluorescent light.

What I would like is one of the power entry modules from mouser (http://www.mouser.com/catalog/621/744.pdf) which feeds into a single power recepticle on the inside (which I would plug a smartstrip into).

I want to make sure I do this safely.  What would I need to do to connect the power entry module to the standard power recepticle safely?  Can I just use standard 14AWG wire and wire it up or would that be a safety hazzard?  Also, what type of power entry module would be needed? Line Filter? 1 pole, 2 pole?

You should use a length of "Twin Core + Earth" mains cable rated for 20Amps.....

That will be fine for this.... I had to think about it for a few seconds, because I'm on the other side of the Atlantic (UK) and we run at a different voltage over here which affects the ampage calculation.

You should be able to get suitable 20 Amp cable, which is usually sold for use with trailing sockets at "Home Depot"

That will give you more than enough spare capacity for your application.

I'd also recommend that you get your socket with a line filter in it and it might be an idea to get one with a breaker built in as well. Just to be on the safe side.
