considering its linux based... now its just a question of the speed.  Since it can handle divx, I'm guessing it will do a decent job with the classics.

The GP2X is also another option (prolly lots cheaper solution as well).  I have one, and love it.  There are many issues to be worked out, but almost all of them are being addressed via new firmware releases.
