<smart@$$>
Do you mean *use* a 4-way and 3 buttons or *can be played decently* with a 4-way and 3 buttons ?
</smart@$$>

I built a box with a 4-way Wico (better choice) and 3 buttons just so I can play the classics. Was well worth it. You get all the side-to-side shooters, the maze games, DK, Joust and more.

Cheers.

By using the 'Search' button, I got this...

Definitive 4-way Vertical List
Horizontal 4-way games

Pretty much every 4-way game will use less than 3 buttons.

Do you want only a 4-way and 2 or 3 buttons?  What about a 2-way (which a 4-way will do fine) and what about only 1 button?

So do you really want 4-way or less joystick with 3 or less buttons?

what mame games use a 4 way joystick which would also be used for 2 way and around 1-3 buttons . like galaga a 4 way joystick can be used and one button.

just lookin at the games of mame because im thinkin of this instead of mame i should use a actual nintendo and soldering joystick and buttons to it. hey what joystick do you guys reccomend for a nintendo pad?

The old colecovision ones.  If you can't find one of those, you'll have to make do with an atari 2600 version.  If you can't find one of those, PM markrvp to see if he's got any of the madcatz controllers he uses for old stuff like that.  He's a soldering tool machine ;D

ummm? if you read the posts, you link to it was a failure. ( 4 way vert) been searching for this answer for 5 years my self
there is NO good way to sort Mame to controlls that I have found.
this question has came across many time a not 1 single time has there been a good answer. always some one links to a search they did but it always leads to a bad game or missing games.

No ofence ment (JM) I value all your imput you have to put in but This one time you happen to be wrong
the Question is a valid one with no answer to be found yet.

I myself have sorted out al vertical games and tried to do this myself , Just by playing them but I seem to get sidetract and forget i am only testing the games for how many buttons . 4 way  or 8 way
I am just not able to keep the mission in my mind  :-\

If you read the question asked by the original poster, both links answer the qeustion raised, therefore, it wasn't a failure.

Furthermore, if Paige's exhaustive list in one of those links doesn't answer the question you just asked, then you're looking for more info than just a list of games to answer your question, and you should revise what you're looking for.  To add, Howard also gave info on how to sort this out, and even went to the extreme length (for him, anyway) of spoon-feeding the code necessary to generate such a list that would yet again, answer your question.

I think there's more to your question than you're letting on dawayne.  Those were two EXCELLENT answers to what you did ask. :)

for one thing I did not ask the question.
2ND I did not say his answer was a failure.
the sort part of the Front ends on the link provided was a failure.
( I did not click the horizontal link)
but the (vertical link) did fail
games were left out
If some one ask what games can you play with a 4 way and 3 buttons
that would include 2 way games and less than 3 buttons
since you can play the game with a 4way
I am just stating a list of vertical games and the controlls needed for them have been needed for a very long time and no list is to be found

He answered the question.  The links provide scads of games.

The sort part of Howard's front end was demonstrated to work quite well, including some games Paige didn't originally list.  What did you read that leads you to believe the sort part of the Front Ends is a failure?  The fact that not ALL of them do it correctly isn't Howard's fault, and the way you've stated it, you've effectively lumped him in with the ones that don't work.

I have the distinct feeling from your comment on the 2way games that you didn't read Howard's follow-up and his description of what was or wasn't entered into his filtering to create that list.  This speaks to the fact that he didn't add 2ways in there, and why he didn't.
You didn't say you wanted 2way games, you said you wanted 4way games.  To do a 2way list I would have to add a 2way entry.  :)

Further, he points out that there will be 2way games added to a 4way list (again, which he didn't add in his sorting) which according to your own words, are playable with a 4way.  What PAIGE'S search was for could be different than yours.  Howard simply laid out HOW to do a search using his FE, and returned a list that could be easily customizable for YOUR use.  The only reason games were left out is the specificity of the search items used, which is why HC told SirP to bite him.
Yes you can it's just the 2 games aren't always listed properly (sometimes they are 4 way)

But since he wants both two ways and 4 ways it doesn't matter.

Also regarding the exact filter.... bite me sirp.  I was just trying to help here.  :P
