49 way + GP Wiz 49?
« on: February 08, 2006, 05:01:16 pm »
Ok, I have been reading some previous threads. I also went to Randy's site looking for answers. I am almost getting to the CP building stage of my cab so i am trying to finalize this. I want to have 2-49 ways on my CP. This is so both player 1 & 2 can have the same feel as well as robotron or smash TV (or Batalzone) has equal feeling joysticks. I understand you need an encoder. I got that idea. but do you need 2 keywiz's for 2 49 ways? It says on the GGG website that with the GP Wiz you can hook up the 49 way and then you still have 23 other inputs. I assume that is for buttons. So, will I need 2? If so, Asside from soldering (which I have no problems with) what is the difference between the eco and max. Just screw terminals?

thanks guys. I am gettin geeked up about this.

Yes, you need a GP-Wiz 49 for each 49-way joystick.

The Max version has screw terminals.  If you get the Eco No-Solder version you can use an IDE cable to connect to the board and strip the wires on the other end.

your right on both accounts, i think.  i got a little lost.

if you have or want two 49-ways, you need two gpwiz49's.  the rest of the inputs you can use for a regular joystick or for buttons, as long as you can remap them.  the difference between the three different kinds is that one you have to solder your own wires to the holes, the second you can use an ide (or is it a floppy) cable to connect to the board, and the third has screw terminals and i think is larger.

EDIT: dito i guess...

The GPWiz49's will be looked at like a joystick by the computer.  You may want to use a keyboard hack for your escape button on your cp.  I use joytokey for a lot of the programs, but it is not recommended if not needed.  Once you get more into this you will understand what I mean.

Hate to dredge up an old thread, but it seems on point for a question I have.  Does anyone have any suggestions for how to wire the esc function to a button on my CP?  The previous post mentiond a keyboard hack, but no details.  Also, I'm hoping someone has figured out an easier way to do it since then.  Will a program like Joy2Key be necessary?

Get a Keywiz eco no solder - $22, and you've got lots of options for other buttons that will work with other emulators\games that don't allow keyboard reassignments...

Mala is my FE.  Already have the encoders installed and working.  I just want to get some of the admin functions enabled now.

In MAME, you can re-assign Esc to any gamepad button - might not work in other programs, though.

Used to be Tab-Controls-User Interface-UI Cancel, but not sure if it still is.
