Extra speakers?
« on: February 07, 2006, 03:44:03 pm »
A couple a years ago I received a surround sound system as a gift for Christmas. It is an off brand and since I have a real nice setup in my living room, I was going to put this into my bedroom. Well the receiver/DVD player is not of top quality and went out soon after. I now have 5 speakers and one sub that I would love to put into my cabinet. They are small, a bit larger then PC speakers and I think mounting them will not be a problem. I do have on the back of my motherboard sound ports. These include front speakers, rear speakers center channel and sub. So I can plug in a set of speakers into each port and get sound. MY question is that I want to add a single volume control to control all of these speakers. Also, I am using regular small PC speakers at the moment. Can i hack the amp in it? I really don't want to put in a receiver.

Would it be easier to control the volume through the PC, instead of controlling the volume on the speaker itself.

I seen many projects here where people have hooked the PC's volume controls into buttons on the CP, to control the volume.

There may be a better way, but I like easy!

Good Luck!

I see what you mean but when i am in the heat of battle sometimes I need to lower or raise the volume. Instead of pause then adjust then resume playing.  I'm sure you know what I mean. I was thinking on the lines of a potentiometer to adjust. Maybe I am reading into your post incorrectly  ??? If you could link me to an example I would appreciate it. I will do a search in the meantime. And hey thanks.

I may be dreaming this, but is seems I recall a how-to at some point regarding hacking a pot to your sound card. I'm pretty sure it was a specific sound card and not just any sound card. Sadly, that's all I can manage to dredge from the dirt-floor basement of my mind. If your search skillz are more 1337 than mine, you may be able to find the thread I'm thinking of (assuming I didn't make it up).
