Adaptoid and N64 - What else can I use?

It seemd as though someone has to die to acquire a couple adaptoid cables to get my N64 controllers to USB in my MAME cab. What else can I use?

Ever heard of Linksang?  Try them.  I bought mine that were also for PS2 for $13 bucks a pop.  No deaths here.

It says the N64/PSX USB Adapter will allow only 1 player. Will 2 of these allow you to play 2 player games?

No Idea. Check google for reviews or something

From what I understand (hear-say only) the ones linked above really don't work very well and it doesn't seem to be clear weather you can use more then one at a time.  I really, really want to be able to hook up 4 n64 controllers to my pc but it doesn't look like it's possible with what the market is offering right now.  I guess those adaptoids are available every once in a while new, but man they must sell out fast.  I think for right now I am going to settle for two n64 controllers hooked up like this (http://arcadecontrols.com/Mirrors/emulatronia/n64pad/) along with  two ps2 controllers to make 4.  Back in the day we always used to play that whenever someone wins they could snag which ever controller they wanted for the next game anyways so now I guess it will just be little more of an advantage.

I must be lucky, I got mine from Jandaman. I paid too much, but it works great. I knew I'd have a problem trying to play N64 with a normal gamepad.

I bought 4 of the ones linked above and they work great.  I also can verify the work fine in 2player (WCW vs NWO :) )However it really depends on what shape your N64 controller is in.  I had 1 stored neatly in a box that works fine, the other I dug out of a bag of junk that I recently moved from house to another doesnt.  I dont think its the adaptors fault  (it used to work beofer i moved) but rather the calibration on the analog stick, which makes setting up the device difficult as it jumps around and goes haywire in the setup process.

I purchased two of those ps2/N64 to USB converters, and neither of them will work with ANY of my (4) N64 controllers.  These are all 1st party, Nintendo made controllers & the WinXP calibration screen is unusable 50% of the time I plug the adapter in.  Even when I CAN calibrate it ok, the 4 axis are not stable enough to successfully configure the emulators themselves.

i.e. DON'T purchase this.

Thats too bad....

I guess there really isnt a solution for b64 emulation anymore at a reasonable cost.

I just received the 2 I purchased from Jandaman as linked above and they work great (without rumble of course).
I picked up 2 original grey N64 controllers off Ebay (different sellers) and they work without a hitch. Showed up in Windows XP, calibrated fine, assigned controls in PJ64, played 2 player games with no additional hassles.
I also connected a couple original PS controllers to them and played games in ePSXe with no problems.

For me it worked out well, but as always, your mileage may vary.

I did pick the cheapest auction off of ebay, & might try a different vendor.  It sounds like I should just wait for new adaptoids though.  :-\

Maybe I'm just doing something wrong.

Assuming I CAN get a controller calibrated, how do I calibrate the z-axis & z-rotation since the n64 only had one analog stick?  I ask because I finally got one of the adapters & one of the n64 controllers working  enough to get a steady calibration.  The issue now is that when I try to configure p64 the z/z-rotation are registering anytime I hit the analog stick.  This would be fine, except that it registers almost as if it were digital.  i.e. full on/full off.

i don't know what you mean by z axis, since your controller should look like a gamepad and you should be calibrating the x and y axis for the analog stick.  as for the input things, i never got it to accept my analog joystick as analog, always digital, which makes it hard to play most games.  good luck though.

a gamepad hack might be the only way to revive an old n64 controller.

This USB adapter looks to windows like a 4-axis gamepad, most likely because that's what it needs to support the PS2 gamepad's 2 analog sticks.

This would be fine, except that the n64 pad's SINGLE stick seems to affect the x, y, z, & z-rotational axis.  In other words, if you're looking at the winXP gamepad test screen:
- moving the analog stick a little bit upward will move the crosshairs slightly, but also send one of the z values to FULL or ZERO.

That's the two I have.  I can't get the analog fast enough.  Otherwise, in Golden Eye, he looks around in slow motion.  I couldn't figure out a way to make it any faster.

Couldn't you just get a couple of converters for the GC and use those? The button placement would be a bit different, but probably nothing you wouldn't get use to.

It's VERY different.  The N64 pads had 4 c-BUTTONS, where the Gamecube's has a c-STICK.

Yes, they do. I haven't heard many reviews on it, but I know they have it.

I never thought about having to hit the c buttons at the same time. I guess that would be a problem. Are there a lot of situations where you need to do that?

Considering ORCARINA OF TIME was playable on Cube, its definitly doable...

Just not for games where the c-buttons were for movement...  ALA strifing in Goldeneye

I think you could probably get around that by changing up the buttons for those games. Since there are a couple different plugins for the controls on the emulator, set one up for the c stick being c buttons, and one with c stick having a and b on it, and a, b, x, and y could be the c buttons.
