Hi Im New
« on: January 26, 2006, 07:32:09 am »
Hi im monkey and im and alcoholic........................ whoops wrong forum

A little about me
Monkey as i said, im 25 and From Southampton, England. im a Seniior CAD technician working in the Waste Management Consultancy sector. i love my sounds as much as i love cars and computers, and i love working on all 3 equally as much.  ive had an array of fast/nice cars with BIG stereos in (the last one was 142db), im currently re-building some computers and re-teaching my self electronics (i didnt realise how much i forgot from college). wy phylosophy is:if i cant buy something (if they dont make what i want or i cant afford to) i try and make it and that with everything.

I found this site by buying a E-Book from Ebay about building and arcade machine, i was just interested in the PC harware and software. but now im come to this forum and had a really good look around im more than just interested.

Im in the process of making a jukebox (im sorting out the PC side of thigs first) and was delighted to find the section on here about jukeboxes and their software. i look for ages to try and find a site like this but i obviously didnt look hard enough.

My jukebox idea is different from what i have seen on this site, it will probably be more suited to a PC forum than a arcade/jukebox forum ans it heavily involves PC networking etc, i will be making some cabinets of some sorts but my wood working skills are nothnig compaired to the poeple on here, but im a quick learner.

Im looking forward to useing this forum as you lot seem like a friendly bunch, and i hope i can assist any of you as much as im going to be asking for help.

.................. and i havnt had a drink for 10 Hours

I hope it wasn't a pirate copy of Saint's book, but welcome.

I'm new too.  I just started getting into MAME, on a friends PC, so I am really stupid about most, if not all, of this stuff.  I'll probably just lurk around the boards roving for tips until I start building.

Hello monkey! I hope you can hear me cos the normal 'safe' level is 90 decibels, which i think is about 500 times lower than 142db!

anyway, welcome to the forum, dude. the joke about the mafia i believe relates to their penchant for monopolising essential services- like garbage disposal, rather than a useful way of geting rid of bodies  ;)

I made the text smaller cos im not deaf......... that i know of. yep it was a little loud, every decible it gets louder 3 times. so it was a bit loud it was funny though cos it was mainly bass so everythnig vibrated including your eyes so it wasnt safe to drive, i could set off caralarms (ones that were presure sensitive) at about 30 yards but i wanted 152.5db or louder as this is how loud a jumbo jet is when its taking off but i would have had to replace all the glass in the car with plastic and that illegal for the front screen. i know ways round it but i couldnt be bothered to spend the extra

I was in a Chevy Trailblazer that hit 152db.  My eyes could not focus and I felt like I was gasping for air.  4 Kicker L7's each powered by its own JL Audio 500/1.  Sick!

not to hijack this, but you guys will be deaf faster than a biker, or members of 'the who'! 140 db is supposed to cause instant hearing damage. dbs are logarhythmic and i think each 20 db is ten times the power of the last eg: 40db is 10 times 20db, 60db is 10x 2 more powerful etc. and so 140db is 10 x 6 more powerful. i think really loud stereos should be banned myself, especially if it sets of alarms and makes people jump. but thats just me, im old and cranky  ;)

i didnt have it that loud all the time, and db is measured in pressure, yep it could blow your ear drums etc

if you are subjected to it for long periods of time the hairs inside your ear can be damaged and its this that will give you damaged hearing.

when i go to a SPL (Sound pressure level) contest i stand outside the car,

the other things to conside is the frequency that you play the tune at, the Higher the frequency the more damage likly,

Quick physics bit

Everything has a harmonic frequency and if you match that frequency you can damage the item. the hairs in your ear are set to a higher frequency than any bass can produce thats why it hurts your ears when subjected to a very high frequency and not to a very low frequency and sound cars are normally set to low frequency. the only damage that can be caused is your ear drums exploding due to the pressure built up in a confind enclosure, just like a deep sea divers would if he wasnt properly protected. i can remember he exact equasion but its nearly impossible to do it in a car as there is too much panel flex and too many places for the air to escape from to get this much pressure.

but if you can reproduce 7hz or lower you will boil your internal organs in about 10mins most high end speakers and only turely (regardless of what the box says) go down to 20hz,

the other magic frequency is 33hz, legend has it that if you can reproduce this frequency exactly, any female in range of this air movement will start to smile as it is the same freqiency of their clitoris.

Franco, good luck with the CAD studying if you need any help just ask.

Just to clarify, that is 10^6 worse, not 60x. I would rather have ten earthquakes that only rate a 1 on the richter scale, then a single earthquake that ranks 10. Hell, twenty level 1 earthquakes is still way less of an issue than a single level 5 earthquake.

But loud music is still the reason why dem dam' kids aint got no respect for der elders dese days!

yes, sorry i meant 10 to the power of 6, or 10,000,000. richter is a similar thing too. 7 on the richter scale is ten times more powerful than 6.

oh, and monkey. apologies. i see now there IS a purpose for such loud stereos- the sound off!

Oh really....  *gets an evil idea*

I think as soon as you mentioned 140+ db, you automatically gained as much respect as someone whos been here for a while with like 2k posts or something.  GOOD IN MY BOOKS!
