Hello guys I was wondering if anyone could help me regarding the finish of my cab. I have painted it with black gloss paint and although not amazing it does look quite good but not to the professional standard i had hoped for. I heard someone mention that in order to get a professional looking finish i could look at getting it powder coated (paint) could anyone confirm this and shed some light on the subject for me. Is your cab metal? I think powder coating is just for metal since they spray it on electrostatically and bake it on. Could be wrong.

Thats a possibility as i say I have little information on the subject mate. My cab is wood so im unsure if I could achieve this effect?

You could try wet sanding and polishing like they do for automobile finishes sometimes?
Or apply full vinyl sideart.

I did consider the side art but its very expensive and can some times be a bit over kill having so much artwork on there. I recently had a marquee done and want to happy with the results so wouldnt trust a full side art. would definately prefer to have it professionally done some how. Does anyone know how to achieve this effect? am i wrong thinking its powder coating process?

powder coating can work on wood...

but it's difficult and much more expensive than powder coating metal...

you'd probably want to wetsand it and then apply a few more coats while wetsanding in between coats...then clear coat it a couple of layers...nice and professional...

anything 'professional' will end up costing quite more though...

Hey Mark,

I can attest that powder coating can and DOES work. Although you'll prolly be limited to certain RAL colours depending on where (if you decide) you get it done. I tested some pieces of MDF out before finally opting to spray.

Just ensure that, if you are doing the whole cab, you don't have any plastic or other meltable parts on show etc. I tried some modesty/connector blocks in our powder coating oven and they deformed with the heat.

One simple method to finish an already painted cab...

1. Apply a generous amount of good polish (I use Novus 1,2, or 3 plastic polish because I have it on hand for my pinball machines)
2. Allow to set until completely dry (like the instructions recommend)
3. Buff off with an orbital sander with buffing pad installed.

You can bring a nice but imperfect finish up to an amazing shine with some good polish.

I recently acquired a capcom MiniCute cabinet that was in yellow, I paid a car re-spray place to spray the entire cabinet in Black spray paint.

I was quite dissapointed with the finsih of the spray paint and a few months later decided to hav the entire cabinet shotblased and powdercoated in black

although the pictures may not show it, the finish with powdercoating is soooo much better and far more hardwearing

Have you tried the Rustoleum "Hammered On" finisish spraypaint?

Works good on metal or wood and gives it a similar look to powedercoated metal.

Thanks everyone and you too Ras2a mate i appreciate your imput i think i'll definately like to get it powder coated i think the finish looks amazing and i like the idea or it being hard wearing too. Anyone know of any companies in the uk that do this?

I used place In Barnsley called Metal Magik they are just of the M1, they actually refurb alloy wheels mainly, any place like that should do it fo you, I know a freind in Leicester uses a place just off the M1 aswell nearby to hmself.

also - it cost me less to have it pwdercoated than it did for respray,

heres a picture of one of the Aero Table I also got powdercoated.
the first Aero Table I did was also a respray, the 2nd one I had to go for powdercoating, seriously its just so much better

powdercoating = real nice quality finish, better for cabinets,

incase your wondering, I've resprayed a few cabs, and powdercoated 2, if I need to do anymore its powdercoating all the way unless I want some rel funky colour (which I doubt)

mdf primer, oil based satin wood paint, put couple of coats on with a sponge roller. Job's a good 'un!

just to make sure everyone is on the same page, marky's cab is wood and the cabs i think mr megalo is talking about are metal. if you had a metal cab, i'd say powder coat it, but since it's wood, i'd be weary of the price figures.
