Played First Video Game Ever
« on: January 19, 2006, 09:10:11 pm »
Orlando Science Center had a preview of their big Otronicon video game industry event tonight.  They had original coin-op games of all sorts.  One of them was
Computer Space.  First commercial game ever.  OSC had a working one.  Game play wasn't great but can't expect much for 1971.   You can see that it was what led to asteroids.

If anyone is in the Orlando area, Otronicon runs through the 29th.

The show was nothing to write home about.  It was mainly a big sales pitch for the local gaming/simulation industry  (Full Sail, Dave School,  Lockheed and various defence contractors).

I've always wanted to play Computer Space. I hear that the game sucks, but just for historic value it would be cool. I'm assuming it was still in the original, funky, cab, correct?

Too bad I live on the west coast...

Try this.  Probably as close to the real deal that most of us will ever see.

That's sacrelicious! Hideous injustice! Tron would be rolling over in his grave, if he was real and if he was dead.

Yes, it was a horrible game.  It was hard to play control and the missiles were steered when you steered your ship.  It made it hard to hit anything.

Yes, it was the funky fiberglass cabinet.

That could have been done SO much better...but I'm guessing it was a 1st cab, so hopefully the next one will be better, but seems like such a waste of a nice cab :o

We should be trying to preserve the classics as opposed to just making them monstrocities. Especially Tron!

You missed the point - it's not the way the cab was done - I've seen the cab with a shelf and an X-arcade get trashed on CrapMame, and I don't agree.  It's not what I would build, but there's something to be said for being able to unplug your CP and use it in the family room on your console system, or take it to a friend's house.

The point is it USED to be a TRON cabinet.  Tron is a very rare and collectible cabinet with a very unique control set.  If it was a scratch-built cab, or a BadDudes or something, I don't think there would be nearly as much heartburn.

AFAIK Tron is fairly common, while Discs of Tron is not.
