Convert MOV to MPG
« on: January 17, 2006, 02:40:20 pm »
Hello, I have a .MOV file from cinemaarcade.com that I would like to convert to .mpg or .avi so I can use it as a startup video for MameWah (mamewah doesn't like quicktime movies!)  Anyone know of a free way to do this, or perhaps would do it for me.  The .MOV file is only 10MB.  Thanks in advance!

Yea tried that one, and it doesn't seem to work for me for some reason (not to mention the output file is over 800MB :))

Post or PM me a link to the original and I'll see what I can do ... what are you specs for the output file (resolution, MPG1 or 2) ?

Cheers.

Original file is here:

I would like best case resolution (ie, keep size the same, and go with whichever is better between mpeg1 or mpeg2)  Thanks!

OK ... no problems converting the file (almost forgot that I have QT Pro) ... the only problem is going to be sizing it properly to look good under MPG1 or MPG2.

Sorenson-3, which is the codec used for the MOV file, handles resizing really well, so that 400x300 MOV file still looks great at 800x600. MPG1 and MPG2 are both pretty week there, so you get pixellation (as I saw in my first two conversions of this file).

I'll try a bunch of things, but I'm kinda busy tonight, so it may not be until tommorrow that I have something reasonable.

Q/ What resolution are you looking to run this in.

What resolution are you looking to run at ?

Cheers.

Ah ... didn't take as much hoop-jumping as I thought it would ... also forgot I have other cool video editing programs (it has been a while since I did much more than encode stuff for DVD).

http://happycampers.to/arcade/TGTTF_intro_RESIZE3.mpg   (19Mb)

Hope this works for you. I had a higher resolution version at 720x540, but it wouldn't play in Media Player (although it did in everything else). I'm happy to tweak the encoding to fit your needs, so LMK.

Cheers.

Well worked fine on my computer, but not on my Mame machine.  It is a new installation of WinXP, and shows error downloading codec when trying to view it in media player...not sure what I need?

Ah ... the lack of an MPEG-2 codec standard in Media player rears its' ugly head ... if you have DVD player software, installing that should solve the problem.

Or you can grab dScaler MPEG Filters, it's  free:

http://www.videohelp.com/tools?s=6#6

DISCLAIMER: I have never used it ... I alway install DVD player software anyway.

And, if all else fails, I can convert it to MPEG-1.

Cheers.
