which pedals? (PHOTOS ADDED)
« on: January 17, 2006, 04:06:14 am »
i'm assembling a set of driving controls and could use some advice selecting pedals. i'm looking for a pair of analog pedals, to be used together with a star wars yoke and a happ 2-position "speed shifter," interfaced through a dave's AKI board.

top priority games are: spy hunter, road blasters, and paperboy.
2nd priority  games include: star wars, outrun, lemans 24, grand prix star.
for now, i'm not considering games that require 360 degree wheels.

i'd prefer to buy new pedals, but might possibly consider used. so far, i'm aware of the following choices, ranging fron 100 to $150).

  - pair of happ modular pedals
  - happ dual pedal
  - CH products propedals USB

is there any reason to prefer any of these pedals, or can you recommend other choices besides these three?

thanks.

I've got a Happ dual pedal setup.  You can wire them either in a single axis (eg throttle = Y+, brake = Y-), or double axis (eg throttle = Y, brake = X) setup, or use a switch so you can use either.  Some games in MAME work better with one type than another.

Frankly I find setting up my pedals a PITA because of these different setups.  I think I went for a fixed dual axis setup in the end, but for some games it doesn't work terribly well (presumably games which used a single axis setup).  However I haven't done an awful lot of testing...

Do a search here, I think there are plenty of threads with more detailed info.

Road Blasters may not be very good with an analog yoke.  The original game used an optical steering wheel.  I've never been able to get the steering right with my Star Wars yoke and a Dual Strike hack despite many attempts to adjust the analog settings and load joystick schemes.  However, maybe the AKI board's settings will be easier to adjust than the DS.

i think i basically undestand the single-axis / dual-axis issues. i'm mainly interested in comparing the available models w.r.t. performance, price, comfort, ease of interfacing, etc.

here are photos of the models i'm aware of:

Happ Modular:

Happ Dual:

CH products pro pedals usb:

logitech momo (pedals can't be bought without 360 wheel):

the happs look a lot more rugged than the ch products or the logitech.

i'm currently leaning toward this unit from westcontrols.com, which appears to be a pair of happ modulars mounted on a wood base:

Is the MOMO a 360?  For some reason I thought it was a 270.

I think you choice should depend on your position: Sitting or standing

Take a close look at their angles and height: If your standing I'd recommend the Happ Modulars or the westcontrols that uses the modulars.

P.S. Thats the first time I've seen westcontrols site. OMG!

i plan to stand, but to my eyes, both happs look like they'd work fine standing.

they have an interesting and unique approach to modularity.

they also sell $600 rebuilt starwars yokes installed in mini-panels!

I bought two sets of Virtua Racing gas/brake pedal assemblies for my driving cabinet a whil back and they are great.   Feel like real pedals and very easy to wire up.

Here is a seller on Ebay who is selling three pairs .... none which sold, so you probably can contact him and get a good deal on one set (or two ;D).  They clean up nice as well .... any rust can be sanded away to reveal the nice shiny silver metal behind them.....

The gas pedal pushes down easy and the brake gives a little resistance, like a real car.   Also, both the gas and brake pedals come with 5K pots, but you might want to make sure the ones listed above come with the pots if you decide to buy a set.

Anyway, just letting you know..... good luck

thanks for the suggestion.
i'm still planning on sticking with new parts, as far as possible.
the only used item in the plan right now is a star wars yoke.
