forum drives cpu usage to 100%
« on: December 29, 2005, 05:16:15 am »
quite often when im in this forum, everything freezes up and ie seems to blame. but it only seems to happen with this forum. on the rare occasion im NOT on the forum when im online all that happens is things getter slower with more windows open (im on dialup nowadays). closing some windows speeds things up. but if it happened with the forum then i have no choice but to close all ie windows. any thoughts?

How much memory does your computer have?

I've got to side with SirP on this one. It sounds like your computer is just not able to handle that many windows open with IE.

I've also tested this forum with Firefox, Mozilla (basically the same thing) and IE 6 both on a fast connection and a slow one (ISDN).  I've not exhibited any slowdown I can think of (other than a largly image posted thread on the ISDN connection).

Heh, I didn't pick a side?

I was just curious.  If you have 256megs that explains it.  If you have 512 you will be running close to using all your memory at idle.

At idle my computer takes up 300megs of memory.  This is with the minimum software I want running on the computer.  Antivirus, firewall, spyware, sound manager, saitek x45 profiler, ipodservice, gnotify, gaim,etc..  The biggest chunk of memory is taken up by explorer, then firewall, then gaim, then antivirus, the ati's stuff.  Then if bit torrent is running that becomes number one.

lessee, i know i have the front of my computer somewhere with the sticker (left it pulled apart after dead drive, now i figure its less likely to be pinched if its all over the place  ;) )

aw crap, i think its still only 256! maybe time to get some more memory. will it help mame as well? (im on a hp with xp, 2.6ghz)

You know, you just need to right click my computer/properties and you can see how much memory you have :)
More memory will help everything.
Do a ctrl-al-delete.  Under the performance tab what does it say for physical memory?
What is probably happening is you are filling up your memory and you computer has to spend most of it's time using the pagefile system.  That take up a bit of processor and hits your hard drive hard.

It may have been that 'ignore this' thread.

All those quote commands slow my 3Ghz PC down to a crawl.
Now in a tasty new flavour.

well, actually i heeded the advice of that heading. i havent looked at that thread! these pics show whats happening. as you can see i just dont care to have much stuff running in the background normally. so you see whats happening with a bit of aphex twin pumpin from the cd player and with nothing at all. im not sure how to read it but the performance tab seems to imply to me that i have 512meg? or not, i dunno. i dont remember putting in extra memory on this pc and the sticker on it says 256...

First, the application tab is rubbish.  It doen't tell you anything.  The processes tab tells you everything that is running.

It does look like you have 512.  Right click on my computer and goto properties to find out.

it says 504mb of ram. which i guess is software talk for 512mb? i recall there being a small issue of definition of what a megabyte is. bugger. i was hoping i did only have 256 mb physical memory. would have been a simple solution... drive doesnt need dfragging either by the way (in case you were wondering). oh well...

This can also be a side effect of a bad plug-in, spyware, a virus; any number of things. Unfortunately, there is no one good answer, and we could conjecture all day on what the problem would be without having access to your machine physically.

I hope your search ends successfully.

Actually, since it's a nice round number that's the difference (8 Meg) then it's most likely that you have an on-board video card that is using that 8 meg as shared video memory.

As for the slowdowns, Click on Start, Run and type "msconfig".  In the startup tab uncheck anything you don't want running.

Beware using msconfig. You can end up really screwing things up.

That would be my guess too.

Also, it does help to reload windows from scratch one or twice a year.
