Unused buttons suggestions
« on: January 10, 2006, 10:04:50 am »
Hello.

I am finally finishing up a couple arcade machines that I started months ago.  I bought the cabs from DreamArcades so they already had predrilled holes for controls.  4 players, 7 buttons each.  There are also 4 buttons across the top that are extra.  What should I assign to those buttons...i was thinking ESC, P (pause) and then I am stuck.  I don't want the people to be able to get into the menus from the cabinet (as it will be out in the open for anyone to use or *break*!).  Anyway any suggestions on the other 2 buttons.

Also, what keys should I assign to buttons 5,6 and 7 on the player 3 and 4?  The mame default only shows RCTRL, RSHFT,ENTER.O for Player 3 and B,E,H,M for Player 4.  What should the other 3 buttons be mapped to?  Thanks in advance!

You didn't say, but you could always use them for "O" and "K"

Yea that would be good in most cases.  I re-authored Mame so it wouldn't ask for that though.  Thanks for the suggestions.  Any others?

Label one of them "Global Thermonuclear War" and then have it launch a batch file that prints "Initiating self-destruct sequence, launching missiles, this device will self destruct in 5 seconds, then plays the ending sequence from Missile Command and turns the cabinet off.

I'm adding this button to my cabinet asap!

I have 3 admin buttons on the shorty cabinet for simple use by 4-7 year olds. "Load" "Pause" "Escape" This allows just about anyone to load and unload a game without direction. I would add "Tab" to the fourth one, but not label it.

You just made my day ;D

I wanna know how he did that.  I have a second control panel that I put 50 buttons on (all alphabet and then the numbers 0-9 and shift, fKeys and ESC) so I could easily just button-type out whatever I needed.

Really works nice if you ever need to SMS someone from your MAME cab, too.

You're starting to make my head hurt

These are great suggestions..yea I am using the IPAC 4 and already have the coin/start buttons in there (so these are in addition to those.)  I am thinking an Enter, Escape, Tab, and a "Global Nuclear War" button!  ;D.  Thanks for all the great replies!

You're really going to want that Pause button, that's all anyone asks me about, and they can't seem to grasp the whole "P1 Start + Joy 1 Down" concept.

Oh yea...forgot...I have pause built into another button on that console!  You wouldn't believe the amount of buttons that were pre-drilled in that panel!  For peats sake, there were 4 buttons for the spinner!  ARe there even any games that use 4 buttons with the spinner??

Good, because I think there's a competition going on here, and that's the first sign I've seen of me taking the lead.

You're just jealous.

Put it on your dashboard and label it EJECT.  See who is the first to push it.
