Can I damage my monitor with unshielded speakers?

I have a cocktail cabinet with a 19" computer monitor and a set of cheap unshielded computer speakers. When the speakers are left alone in the bottom of the cabinet they don't seem to be affecting the monitor at all. If I move the speakers around they will actually degauss the monitor!

While I don't see any affect from the speakers right now, is it possible over time they'll hurt the monitor?

Can I (and should I) try to add some sort of shielding to the speakers? My understanding is that shielding is just some metal to cover the magnets and place it between the monitor and the magnets. Is this correct? Would aluminum foil work or does it need to be a ferous metal? Should I bother?

I can't afford shielded speakers right now. Should I do anything or do you think it's ok as is?

I think its likely that eventually you will get a negative effect from having unshielded speakers so close to the monitor--you are correct--it needs to be a ferrous metal to interupt the magnetic field surrounding the speaker magnets--a tin box made from sheet metal would do the trick (I use furnace duct for things like this)

You could always hit freecycle.org for your area and ask if someone has any used pc speakers they feel like getting rid of--they will be free if anyone has any.
