Buttons work flawless in notepad, but jump bindings in MAME!
« on: January 05, 2006, 03:13:19 pm »
Here's a perfect example:  Coin 1: If I go into the settings in MAME32, it seems to fluctuate between 1, 5, and "NONE" whenever I want to bind the key (5 registers probably 70 percent of the time). If I go into notepad, it will register as 5 EVERY single time I press the button.

I'm using a mini-pac and MAME32.  I don't know that this was always a problem, but it seems recent (Guess it could have been there from the start).

It's really annoying because it's a two player panel.  And on single player games, I like to map my buttons to the second player default buttons for more elbow room.  Example:  The global settings are:  Player 1, button 1 is Left-Click mouse and Player 2, button 1 is A.

I've noticed occasionally, if I go to remap Player 2, button 1 (A) to be Player 1, Button 1... even though I press A, it will occasionally register as Left Mouse click (The global default).  Sometimes it never happens, sometimes it's like 50/50 as to which button it will register as.  I'm sure it's doing it in-game and missing button presses too.  (And when it's going goofy and only registering correcting 50/50, if I jump straight to notepad, it's registering correct 100 percent of the time).

Any ideas as to why this is happening?  And I haven't programmed the mini-pac.  I'm just using the default settings.  In summary, it seems like global settings sometimes override in-game settings (Although the coin buttons seem to be an absolute mess at the moment (MAME only).

I had a similiar problem with my IPAC4.  The 3rd player buttons would go complately crazy even though in notepad when doing the ALT/CTRL/P they were mapped correctly and never acted odd there they would during a game.

Two things, i dunno which one really fixed it or completely what i did but here is what I did and it now works and has been working perfectly through mamewah.

1.   Reset IPAC back to defaults by going into notepad and doing a CTRL/ALT/P and there is an option number to reset all to default.   I did that and then basically used the same program,  (another option on the same menu) to program certain buttons the way I wanted.

2.  I dont think my ipac liked the Passthru keyboard port being taken up,  it would work most of the time but I noticed that sometimes I would have to unplug the actual keyboard and reboot for it to go back to normal.  If you have a passthru keyboard plugged in unplug it and see if that helps at all.

3.   Make sure that you dont have any buttons mapped to windows shortcut keys , or keystrokes such as CNTRL + O or the windows key.  This will cause it to freak out as well.

The only tools I use are that onboard program suggested above and this program suggested by Ultimarc to help you make sure the buttons are reacting correctly and what keys they are mapped to.  Green is good Red is bad,  Very simple  (the pause button will be red no matter what in this program, ignore that) .   With this program you can also tell whether or not one key is causing multiple strokes or is attached to two different keys somehow.    Here is the link, its a trial version but you can fully use it for 30 days, hopefully by then it will be fixed.

I dont know much about the minipac and I know these are some suggestions from my experience with my IPAC but hopefully helpful, if not sorry to waste your time!

Good luck
