control pannel buttons
« on: January 02, 2006, 10:13:35 pm »
hi,

im in the planning/construction phase of my cab but i've kinda hit a brick wall. My problem is that im not sure what buttons i will all need on my control pannel. I searched around but really couldnt find a good post for it. Im going to use the I-pac 2 if that helps. If anyone has any links or info that would be great.

Use the standard pushbuttons offered through the dealers/vendors on the board or through Happs. The size of the hole will be 1-1/8".

That makes a little more sense. I was thinking you might want to stop now if you couldn't figure out what buttons to buy.

I have my gameplay buttons on the control panel and the menu buttons on an administration panel. How many you should include will depend on how much room you have on your panel. On my menu panel I have the 1p and 2p buttons and the coin buttons for each, as well as buttons for shift, escape, and a couple buttons I have yet to assign.

I'd recommend at least having player 1 & 2 coin-up and start buttons, a pause button, and an exit game button.  Those are the buttons on my cab and I use all of them frequently.  On the sides of my CP and semi hidden I also have a button to enter the mame config menu, an "enter" key button to be able to navigate the config menu, and the power button to the cabinet.  I find those buttons are very useful, but are not necessary to have on the CP.  If you have a keyboard tray then you wouldn't need any config buttons.

Don't forget the "O" and "K" buttons for pressing "OK" for MAME's nag screens.  ;)

Can't you just move player 1's joystick left then right to get past the OK?

I haven't actually put mine together yet but I've got the following buttons on my layout:

6 for Player 1 and 6 for Player 2
Pause
Exit (ESC key)
P1 Start
P1 coin
P2 Start
P3 Coin

I also have a 2nd set of 2 buttons for P1 next to a 4 way joystick, in other words, 2 of the 6 buttons for player one are replicated (wires spliced on IPAC) to a 2nd joystick (which also has the wires spliced) for Player 1.  Primary joystick is 8 way, other joystick is 4 way.

Yes, now, you can.  The 'o' and 'k' buttons have become a running joke.
But wasn't it fun to think you won the lottery, just for a second there???
