i'm not aware of any games that use two rows of 4 buttons, but there are definitely games with 2 rows of 3 and games that have an extra button for your thumb.

i'd suggest two rows of 3 plus a button for the thumb, for example, this slikstik:

I'm also not aware of any game that uses more than 2 rows of 4 for players 1 and 2 unless your gonna run some console emulator, and players 3 and 4 only need 4 buttons max

Cheers,

Tim

Also, are you planning on adding a trackball and spinner?

My friend thinks I'm crazy for going all out with the trackball and the spinner but my logic is, if we are going to do this we might as well go the WHOLE way.

It looks like you have plenty of space in the middle of the panel.  ;D
I had to beat them to death with their own shoes...

the choice of controls is determined by what you want to play. sounds like you've already made that decision. (my approach is the opposite of yours: include many different types of controls and keep a single user centered as much as possible, rather than standing off to one side.)

to test your layout, print it out full-size, get 3 friends, and see if you can play comfortably, without bumping elbows.
