Glow wire
« on: December 19, 2005, 03:30:01 pm »
Hey all,
Several questions
Has anyone played with glow wire?
Is it strictly off /on or can it be dimmed with voltage / resistance changes. I know that it uses an AC inverter but do not know much more than that.

If it were used in combo with the LEDWIZ could you fade glow wire up and down or would it pop on like neon.

How much light does it actually produce?

I know that the EL nightlights don't actually put out that much light. Is it more for direct sight rather than ambient lighting?

I think most EL inverters are 12volt so the USB power wouldn't be enough.  Also, USB power only provides .5amp (I think).  I don't think this would be enough to drive the inverter even if the voltage was correct.  The LED-WIZ also wouldn't be able to dim the EL.  The inverter would have to do it.

Alright so I will need a 12v Powersupply. Can it be Dimmed? I am thinking about surrounding translucent buttons with glowwire. I figure that if I beveled the Plexi, there would be enough room to get a string of glow wire in the ring then make a small nic that the sire could go back under the CP. I am not sure if the glow wire would light up the button too much that the LED would be ineffective. I was thinking that it would look really slick to have glowing rings with glowing buttons that could work independently of each other. I would think that the LEDWIZ could controll a transistor, triac, or relay to controll the EL. Any thoughts?
