Author Topic: Experience with Mag-stik plus from Ultimarc? (Read 3235 times)

Hello everyone,

I had settled my mind on T-stiks for my cab and then saw that Ultimarc has a new "Mag-stik" that features magnetic centering as opposed to springs? Anyone tried one of these new Mag-stiks and any noticiable difference?

Just when I though I had everything figured out...

I am interested to see feedback on these sticks as well. Of course one of the problems is that joysticks are a very subjective thing, and although some people found the original T-Stiks rather heavy, most people liked them. Based on feedback we might consider stocking both types.

From those earlier reviews, it seems like it lightened them too much. That's my concern is that they don't center as well as before.

I put them in last night and love them. My wife was very impressed with the 4 way switching for ms pacman. I had no trouble performing all the moves in streetfighter. That was the extent so far, had to go out of town, but was very impressed.

I know one of those models can rotate 45 degrees by the user. Is this that model?

I can second that. I much prefer the feel of the mag-stick to the T-stick. Don't get me wrong - the T-stick is good, but the Mag-Stick feels a lot more precise and consistent. The switch actuation just seems to be 'cleaner' as well - don't really understand how that could be possible, but there is a distinct difference in feel between the two.... you'd have to have them side-by-side and test them back-to-back (which I have done) to notice the improvement... I'm not sure the difference or improvement would be that evident if you haven't tried a T-stick before.

You guys that just got them, do you notice that they dont center as well? I just got a chance to test my t-stick with my new ipac, and it centers fabulously, but because I still have the heavy switches, it's definitely a chore on games where you're leaning on one side of the stick a lot.

I just started learning of arcade building/buying, and this joystick has me very interested.

Since this joystick can be converted from 4 to 8 way without opening the control panel, I would think people would be all over it. I have been looking at the upright kit from Dream Arcades and was leaning away from it because it didn't have a 4 way stick and they don't customize. Now I'm reconsidering it because I'm thinking I could buy the Mag Stick Plus and switch it with one of the two main sticks, and there you go (well, I'd still be lacking a spinner, but that's something I may be able to live with. I couldn't live without a 4-way).

Any thoughts?

We can do custom sicks, it just take a little longer to get your arcade sent out.

Thanks for setting me straight on that. It's good to know.

I'm moving slow on this and learning as much as I can (not so much to save money but to get it right the first time). I really like what the Dream Arcade upright kit has to offer at first glance, and I'll probably be sending some questions soon.

Since my CP was already completed and populated with Wicos I am having to fabricate a new mounting plate for the sticks as the one included does not fit the same pattern. Not a huge deal but something to be aware of if you happen to be retro-fitting the sticks.

While I don't have much to compare them to (only vague recollections from playing on DanW's SlikStik-based Aarghcade), I'd have to say I love my Mag-Stick Plus's so far and think they're a perfect replacement for the old 2x 8-way and 1x 4-way layout people used to have to do.

I just got them installed Saturday in my first CP and they work great! Only thing that bugged me (which is common to all microswitch-based Sticks) is that there's a clicking sound everytime you move it. It turned out to actually be a sort of handy way to confirm whether you're in 8-way or 4-way mode though

I still have to snag some ball-tops for mine... Anyone know much about the Ultimarc replacement ball-tops as to the length difference between the "regular" and "long" ball-top replacements?
