Flashable doorbell
« on: December 16, 2005, 10:41:25 am »

So, the doorbell on my house has been nonworking the entire time we've owned it.  I'd like to change that.

But, as a BYOAC member, I can't have just any old DING DONG doorbell.  I want one that is cool.

Has anyone ever seen one with flashable memory?  Kind of like ringtones but for your doorbell?  I was thinknig I could change the sound every few months so I don't get sick of it.

I want a doorbell that screams like Tom from Tom + Jerry.

I'm also pondering a small trap door in the porch that opens with a boot on a stick and kicks the person in the ass.

I don't need a doorbell, but I'll be the first in line to buy one of those.

Jerry is the mouse.  Jerry doesn't scream because Jerry wins.

That is the "new" Tom + Jerry which is a bad ripoff of Itchy and Scratchy which is itself a bad ripoff of the original Tom + Jerry.

I watch it on the Cartoon Network with my kids.  The network actually censors Tom + Jerry.  Some audio is clearly rerecorded.  Any of the racial jokes they made are cut and the black woman's voice is completely redubbed.  It's sad.

SirPoonga... hrm... that one is close, but it looks like you can't PUT sounds in it, just program it to play a sequence of stored sounds...

Funny response considering I linked to a google search, not a particular product :)

If you have an extra computer or laptop you could just make one.  Hack the doorbell button to a gamepad or keyboard, hook up speakers to the computer...

Or since I know billy the bass has been hacked...

Every match that came up was to the same product, though.

I don't really want to hack up a solution for this one... not THAT motivated and there are enough rogue PCs running in my house already.

Though I could see a laptop hacked into an LCD wall display that also doubles as a doorbell.  Damn you.

No, I just make something happen outside.

The cops love to pull people over right in front of my house.  I get to watch tickets, sobriety tests, arrests, cars being towed... I just need a police scanner for full audio.

I will if I can get one from Freecycle.

Last fall I watched them give this teenager a sobriety test, tear everything out of his car, find a bag of pills, chase him into the woods when he ran, and then have trouble getting him into the car when he wouldn't stand up.

I've rarely laughed that hard in my whole life.

I thought I remembered seeing something on digg.
http://iain.cx/articles/doorbell/

http://www.compuphase.com/mp3player_en.htm
Probably a little over kill but you'd just need to add a short song.

"Use switches to select tracks and settings: either one track per switch or have switches to move forward and backward through the tracks; a switch press can start playing a track, or the device may keep playing as long as a switch is being held down. You may also choose to play a random track, so that the audio effect is different each time that a user pushes the buttons."

So you could have it play a random song.  Setup a timing circuit and you can have it only play like 5 seconds at a time.

"The digital I/O pins of the H0420 can drive LEDs or opto-couplers. There is intrinsic support for displaying output to an LCD."  ;)

Yeh, that's pretty much what I had in mind. Sounds so cool that I'd do it myself but I live so far out in the middle of nowhere that I rarely have unexpected visitors. All unexpected visitors are greeted with the business end of a pistol, so I don't really need to know who's out there. ;)

I lost that argument about a door too.

Gotta admit, though, it's a lot cheaper to heat the place now that we have a door.

Here ya go boss
