OK, not really, but this is what happens you you tell a bunch of BYO types to build an electric go-kart with a 2'x2' wheelbase.

Thats me in the red helmet. My kart is ~100 lbs, + 160 lbs of me, powered by a 2hp electric motor from a floor polisher. Toss in a speed control from a forklift, leave off the brakes, and hilarity will ensue.

Video here. The second part, inside, was later that night - with alchohol fueled consequences. Be sure to turn the volume up for the closing comment.

Heh Heh, I liked the sound track. Funny thing is,

a) we never saw YOU driving in the video around the race track unless
b) that was you near the end doing the faceplant off the ramp

and finally

c) I wouldn't want to be the guy who parked his red truck in the race track. He must of gotten hit at least once...

No, that was an older video - I was actually standing in the middle taping. Watch carefully, and you can see me trip over the tripod as I try to follow the lead cart.

Heres one with me racing like a loon. Not as professionally done, but you do get to see my kart's secret weapon.

Mine tops out around 25 mph, which may not sound like much, but when your center of gravity is that high...

No trucks were damaged in the making of that video. Only pride.

Ding!

Theres a rear-facing halogen light to blind followers, the smoke screen, but the others complained when I showed them the water spray (to simulate the oil slick), so that was removed.

I wanted to paint it to match, but ran out of time and was restricted to colors on hand.

Heh. Yep, totally from scratch.

Wheels - Ebay
Motor - Ebay
Speed Controller - Ebay
Steel tube - local junkyard
Seat - some plywood, foam, and blue vinyl crap that was kicking around.
Steering wheel - cut out of 1/8" aluminum
Steering parts - cheated and bought those from a go kart place
Sprockets and chain - go kart place
Differential - surplus place
Batteries - surplus place
wire - junk pile at work
Misc crap - home depot.

total cost ~ $400 bucks

Building it at work during the bosses vacation week ~ priceless.

Hit the throttle hard and that motor pulls over 200 amps. With the wide slicks, theres 0 wheel spin. Lean forward enough and you can get up to 25 mph in a second or two.

I only try to build things that will limit the injuries to me. My wife has forbidden me to work on siege engines.

Yeah, they can be pretty unpredictable. When I have mine set up at a school for kids to see, I don't let anyone come within about 50 feet of it in any direction.

A friend built a treb and has great fun lobbing items into his neighbors back yard. His halloween parties are truly parties to be remembered.

Theoretically, we are the adults. I fall into (as do most of the people here, I'm sure) the "I may grow old but I'll never grow up" category.

Heck, I'm 33, and still wake up early on Sat morn to watch cartoons. Only problem is, the cartoons suck now.

I want a trebuchet. I have to acquire carpentry skills for this reason alone.

There are too many stray cats in my neighborhood. I want to move them, one at a time, to the next town over.

I like hidden and randomly triggered trebuches myself. Launching only on elimination smacks of logic and I for one am against it.

How, exactly, does one hide a treb? Doesn't the dangerous part typically lie between the uprights?

I only know where you can buy the plans, dunno where you can get them for free.

There's not a whole lot to it. You don't really need a lot of plans. You need two uprights and enough wood to brace them & keep them steady. You need a throwing arm & sling, and something for them to pivot on. Feel free to look at my site, I think there are enough pics of the build to give you a pretty good idea of how they go together.
