Suggestions on PC Gamepad
« on: December 15, 2005, 07:43:40 pm »
Does anyont have suggestions on good PC gamepads that are multi-console friendly?  I have a Thrustmaster Firestorm Dual Analog 2 right now, but it seems Thrustmaster doesn't make it (or a similar model) any longer.

And when I've gone to CompUSA and BestBuy...it seems the selection of PC gamepads is...slim... to say the least.  Seems no one aside from Logitech is making them anymore and I really dont like the square analog control box that they have.

ANy suggestions?  I'd like something I can use for NES/SNES/N64/Genesis.

If you are going to go with a USB gamepad, I would get a Saitek.

I have two Saitek Dual Analog Gamepads, and I use them for all consoles, including N64.   It works very well, and I'm very happy with it.  (Just to note, the one linked above is not the exact one I have)

However, if you're up to it, get an adaptoid to put an N64 controller on your machine.  Nothing beats it.

But, the Saitek is useful because it has shoulder buttons, as well as six buttons on the front in addition to others.  The six buttons on the front are in a good configuration for sega games, and also work well as the C buttons on an N64 controller.

As far as brophog's comments, I wouldn't think it applies to N64 or other complicated console controllers.

I have been toying with the idea of getting the gamepads for all the systems and adapting them to USB and hot-swapping them...

brophog: Already getting an X-arcade.  Next step is a cabinet and control migration once I get a house/place I can do woodwork (a one bedroom in the city, with a wife, doesn't cut it).

pkurby1: Cool thanks.  I hadn't looked at Circuit City yet.  I did put in a big on e-bay for a Thrustmaster Firestorm (so I could have 2 similar controls).  Things only like 10-12$ with shipping and almost new...if it doesn't pan out I'll check the saitek.  Do you find the square analog holes problematic.

And the issue with the adaptoids and the PSX adapters is I dont have a PSX or an N64 - at the moment.  Though your USB comment sounds perfect.  I just take issue to paying $20 for a USB connector :).

Thanks! :)

I use an Xbox s-type, works great for N64, and they seem higher quality than most PC gamepads. You can buy an adpater for ~$6 shipped off ebay, I just made my own fron an old usb cable, just match all the wires from the Xbox, except the yellow one, which is only used for light guns\pens. You also need the driver from http://www.redcl0ud.com/xbcd.html

If you do not want to pay for a PS2 or a N64 adaptor
then a sidewinder is best,
also very simple to hack later on if you decide to later.
i like PS2 to hack but sidewinders are top notch
Never hacked a USB one
Game port.
Caution, NEVER add a extention to a gameport side winder. Wrecks them.

Already getting an X-arcade.

If you haven't gotten one yet and want a slightly used one send me a PM.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys.  I'll take a look on ebay, see what I can find for a decent price and get something setup! :)
