Torrents
« on: December 15, 2005, 11:37:24 am »
Hey guys, I found a couple of threads that talk about torrents.
Question 1. What is a Torrent? They talk about contributing and not being a Leecher. What is a Leecher? I found a MAME torrent ([romsite name redacted]???)and you have to download special software to use it. Has anyone done this? Pros - Cons?

Torrents in a nutshell:

You download some software that sets up your personal computer as both a client and a server.
A central computer keeps track of everybody who WANTS a certain file and everybody who HAS that same file.
The software you've started on your own PC will download part of that file while simultaneously uploading to any number of other people.
IOW: As you download portions of the whole file, those portions on your computer get served to others.
Eventually, in the best case scenario, everybody gets the entire file.
No crap, don't put your kids in a real fridge.

Torrent Wiki definition (more than you'll ever need to know): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bittorrent

Torrent can be used for legitimate reasons and not-so-legitimate reasons. [romsite name redacted] does both on it's tracker. :)

As for clients, there are a ton out there. Google for torrent client review. I personally use ABC.

Check out all the clients listed in the wiki.  I prefer azurues with the speedscheduler plugin.

When I first heard of torrent I started using the app from bit torrent's website.  I thought I'd just need that.  But then after you try a good client like ABC or Azurues you realize the default one is just a tech demo to implement the protocol.

I responded that way because it doesn't belong in Main.

And yes, I am a sarcastic ass.  I would go far, far further than that, but that is another discussion for another sarcastic day.

That was uncalled for. Please keep that in the EE forum.

The question may have belonged in the software forum, but it is a valid question nonetheless.

I have changed my nickname to "Cakemeister". Please do not PM the Buddabing account because I do not check it anymore.

Please read the wiki!

There is a report to moderator link in which you can express this opinion instead of replying in such manner.

I htink the question has been answered to satisfaction and I am locking the thread before this gets out of hand.
