Playchoice Hum
« on: December 14, 2005, 07:33:57 pm »
I have a playchoice 10 single monitor arcade game system and I have a fairly loud humming noise coming from the speakers while playing the games or just simply powered up. It is very disturbing. I know that it seems like maybe something isn't grounded properly or some type of RFI. I have the schematics to the system, but just not sure where to look. Has any one had experience with this problem before maybe with the playchoice system? Please advise.

Thanks, Dan

I am dealing with the same issue with my Ms. Pacman. Check your proximity of your speaker wires to your transformer. You want to keep your speaker wires well away from power. (which is hard to do in a cab.) Is it a buzz or like a 60 Hz. hum? Is your speaker wire single strand or multistrand.

Yea it is a 60hz hum.. It's constant.. Not sure about the conductor wire.. Stranded or solid.. It does it on all games and even right after it boots up..annoying as crap..

My nintendo VS was doing that.
I just turnd down the brightness of the monitor and the buzz went away.
maybe I just hit a wire and got lucky?

Could be a bad filter cap on the power supply. Play choice is roughly 20 years old right? The cap could be all dried up. Mouser, digikey, or Jameco should have replacements.

I have a hum in my Punch-Out cabinet. It isn't particularly loud and not noticeable during gameplay, but you can hear it when it is in attract mode, from up to several feet away. You could start by rebuilding the audio amp (Bob Roberts sells kits for $5) or you can just chalk it up to the "Nintendo Hum" and live with it because a lot of people have never solved this and claim that it is normal for a Nintendo cabinet. Here's 53 threads on the subject to get you started - http://groups.google.com/group/rec.games.video.arcade.collecting/search?group=rec.games.video.arcade.collecting&q=nintendo+hum&qt_g=1

Bob back on line after the hurricane?
I knew he was safe, but I thought his store was washed away.

Bob and his stuff is fine. I bought some stuff off of him a week or two ago.
