Cutting my NES chaff.

Im looking to do a DC NES mod soon and I thought I would sort a set of NES roms out for use with NesterDC SE.

I looked in my NES rom folder and there is over 8000 roms taking up over 1.8GB. Obviously alot of them are regional (for want of a better word) repeats ie (J), (U), (E) and I only want one copy of each rom, probably (U). There are also different versions of each 'regional' rom.  I was wondering if there is a program or a method I could use to get my collection down to size?

Use Good Tools.  It will break it into countries, hacks, etc.....

Thanks, my collection has already been diagnosed with GoodNES and so they are already labeled (U) [!] etc.

I just want to get rid of the (J)'s, (E)'s etc. Can GoodNES do this? If not I will try the method in KDOG's link.

I actually went through mine by hand.  it took about 2 hours, but I have zero games that I don't want and half are just in there because someone "might" play them.  I find that I stick with around 10 games, the rest are just for coolness factor.  With friends using my machine, it makes a difference having things in smaller lists.  If there are 3000 games in your list (in my experience) their eyes glaze over and they ask "Do you have game x?" or just become disinterested.

you could also do it really easily in the dos prompt by just using the command "del *xx*.zip"  where "xx" is the region/hack (such as (E), or [!] ).  And of course, if your files aren't in .zip files, just change the extension.

You can get rid of all of the (E), (J), and [!] this way in about 30 seconds.

Good Tools definitely will split the roms into individual folders.  It is very easy to do and is one of the first things described in the how to.

goodtools f-ed me over by renaming all my roms, which i need for zsnes netplay.  i thought it would eliminate the ones with the same checksum, not the same region.

I used this program made by a fellow byoacer and it worked great. You assign a point value to codes such as region, hack, demo etc and it will filter everything into a new folder. If you are happy with it you just use the new folder. It doesnt change the name of anything.  I sorted mine to only include japanese games if there was not an american version of the game. It made a huge diffence in the amount of space for my snes, nes, and sega collections.

I second the ROMsorter program above.

I had issues with it with certain sets (Atari5200 and Atari 7800) because of the presence of [o#] and [b#] and no [!]'s (This is the standard goodset too...they just aren't there).  Those sets are so small though that it was easy to delete the crapola manually.

And, in the end, if you accidentally delete 5-10 of 2000 roms...your not going to notice unless it's a game you normally play.

I kind of wish MAMEwah had a one button 'add to favorites' method that would work well.  Make it easier to setup custom lists.

Another member uploaded the whole (U) + (E) set to a free download site for me. I may use these methods for my other sets tho.

Just a little note on the ROMSorter program.  If you want to get it to select roms with no tags instead of those with [a#] and [o#], just set a and o as negative values in the options and it will work that way.  At least, it is for me
